Want to change the impeller on the 85 Johnson not elec shift. This is probably the newest motor I've ever worked on :)
The six main bolts are normal for the OMC lowers but is there some kind of disconnect for the shift rod? Maybe another procedure I need to do?
Tks, Cal

Never mind....I found the answer on youtube. What a crappy place to put a bolt!
Anyhoo I got the unit off. PO said it would pee out the hole but still get hot, that's the reason for pulling the LU and changing the impeller.
The impeller itself was in soft "set" mode, pumped but not to be trusted in the long haul.
What I did find is that who(m)? ever change the last impeller screwed up the gasket and water had to be pushing out of the pump just enough that it effected the cooling.
Ordering a new 'peller and gasket tonight.
Just to let you guys know to make sure those gaskets are set properly before anything is bolted down. Ya could be looking forever at plugged hoses, thermostats, and misaligned tubes.

Was it the bolt under the trim tab?

Naw, wasn't the hidden bolt unner the trim tab, that was one of the six I take out. All the oldie OMC's I ever worked on were either electric shifters that you could just disconnect and pull wires through or ones that had the bolt "splice" in the drop leg that was easy access. Just goes to show how old I'm gittin'. This "new" one to me had a regular straight shifter rod that has a small slotted 7/16" bolt hidden under the front side of the powerhead. Had to disconnect the shift and throttle cables from the motor just to see and reach the thing. Used a long heavyweight screwdriver to loosen it up and then my spring loaded long reach lost bolt retriever to pull it out. Think it will be a party trying to put it back together, maybe a few brews to steady the nerves first.
Here's a few pictures of what it is, where it comes from and where it goes.
