TOPIC: Control cable length

Control cable length 9 years 3 months ago #114625

Hello all,

Can the control cables be shortened? This is for a 1957 Johnson 35 HP with appropriate 1957 control box. The existing cables are way to long for the throttle and shift.

If they can be shortened, how do I go about making it happen?

No, I guess you could try and loop the cables once but I don't know how much extra cable you have to play with. Can you move the control box forward?

Thanks for the reply. No, I cannot move the control box forward. It would be so far forward I would have to use my feet to reach it! The cables are probably two feet too long.

could you possibly loop them across the back of the transom and maybe come out the other side.. to take up extra length..
i know i have done this in the past.. but my cables were way too long.. and it came out nice...

Andreas, I know on the older shift cables, you could cut, crimp and heat temper the ends to fit at any length. I have a service manual that tells how to do that. If you want,I can post some pics of the instructions on this. JimL

Andreas, I want to apologize for the above post. I pulled out the old service manual and read the chapter on the shift boxes and apparently I remembered incorrectly what I had read before. The book tells how to remove the temper out of the end of the wire so the set screw can hold the wire in place in the slider. Again,my apologys. Jim L
