I guess it's pretty common for the plastic screens in the water intakes to crumble away with age. This is on my 84 Evinrude 70 hp. I've been looking at all the great parts sources like marineengine.com, iboats, etc but looks like those screens are discontinued and NLA. Any idea where I might find them?

I've swapped the Evinrude onto my Glasspar and getting ready to install the new impeller kit, and I'd like to replace the intake screens while it's apart.

After that, when I finish reconnecting the wiring, it will be time for a shakedown cruise.

Thanks a lot Mark. I have the E70ELCRD model and they had one screen left in stock. Looks like it covers both sides of the gearcase. Ordered it up!

Yeah these newfangled ones are really something. This one actually has a charging system that works! I'm keeping the old Merc 650 for future rebuild. Being an unmarried guy, I like to keep a couple projects around in case I find myself growing nostalgic for some pain and suffering. ;)

Intake screen on the way. Meanwhile, after a few days of noodling around with the install, I fired it up on the muffs today. First try, nothing but cranking. No fire. After a few minutes of head scratching, I realized I hadn't clipped in the little lanyard plastic gizmo on the emergency shutoff switch. Clipped it in place and it broke in half. :S Dern newfangled stuff.

Taped it together with PVC tape, installed it, and it fired right up. Sweet. Only thing not working is the tach I took out of the donor boat. Seems like my boats are just not destined to have working tachs.

Took the Glasspar to the spray wash for its springtime bath, gathered some onlookers. Everyone likes the old toys. As soon as the screens and impeller are in, it's time for a splash!

Got the repowered Delmar out on the lake Monday. Ran good, no cavitation unless I trim it up too far, And it topped out at 29mph with 360 lbs of people plus gear and a full load of gas. That's a 5-6 mph gain at top speed. I have another tach on the way so once that's in I'll be able to evaluate the rpms to see if a different pitch will be better. Lovin' the power trim and that charging system is strong.

Two observations, one is she still rolls enough to startle you sometimes. Very sensitive to weight distribution and she can give you a scare under the right conditions like a gusty crosswind. Two, this is the best 16 footer I've ever used when it gets choppy. Must be the extra weight of the cabin. Heading back in, the wind had gone from dead calm to 20 mph gusts with whitecaps. We were running straight into it and the boat was as smooth and stable as you could ask for, at any speed. No slapping or banging.

Forgot my hat when we left for the lake so I had to improvise one out of bungees and a pair of cargo shorts.

That's the good, the bad, and in the photo, the ugly.

OK, I'll say it. With that headgear you should have two camels pushing on the back
