I had the pleasure going for a ride in "Wild Thanggg" with the Doc a while back, on Kitsap Lake. It wasn't a calm day, and definitely a white-knuckle ride at 60+!!! :0

Wild Thanggg has gone quite a bit faster than that with just the Doc at the helm, on calm water, but she's quite a handfulllllll!!!

The Mighty Tower of Power was a bit hard on the transom, so Doc has re-rigged 'er to fit a beautifully-restored 850-4; she may not be quite as fast, but will still be a nice-running rig!

Cheers.......ed

In one of the attached pictures, you will see a youtube video number.
You will need to write it down and type it into your browser to see the video of WildThanggg's last ride with the Monster Merc.
The YouTube title for this video is "Island Lake Wild Thanggg and Bandit"
The video shows Bandit, which is one of the absolute best restored G3s I've seen, getting thoroughly spanked by Wild Thanggg.
Wild Thanggg is going about 5 MPH faster in this video than it was in the other posted video.
There is about 10+ MPH difference between Bandit and Wild Thanggg.
The other picture was taken a day or so earlier by Dean Lofall, and shows a USAF fighter jet breaking the sound barrier as it tries to keep up with Wild Thanggg.

I was out at Doc's yesterday, and some sad news the "WildThanggg'". Guess rode hard, but had to be put away "wet". Thom did SO MUCH work that boat, but somehow the transom got "spongy". Motor is on the Flatbottom he's putting together, the "wifes" G3 is taking its (WT) place, with a BEAUTIFUL 850 XS, white and purple multi color flake paint boat, custom purple Merc XS decals, and its simple gorgeous, knock yer socks off pretty! Doc, take a pic it! And next year I have to drag my Flatty out, and play with him in his Flatty on the lake. Should make for some interesting video, just need someone to do the vid! Nice seeing ya yesterday Thom! (And I got a ride in WT too, Mason Lake!)

For some reason I can't get a picture (900x600) to load, so maybe later.

Hi fellow G3 owner. I am restoring my G3 from my youth (1963 vintage) and am shopping for a motor. I have used a 75 and 90 V4 evinrudes in the past but I am wondering how much your merc weighs. I would like to use a new E-Tec but the weights are 230 lbs for a 60 HP and 320 lbs for 75/90 hp. What suggestion do you have for too much weight?
Thanks and any feedback would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear about the transom issue with the WT....I'm sure the good Dr. will have it sorted soon. If not, send it to East Tennessee and I will provide it with a good home and nice new transom with a big set of knees, if not nearly as wild a power plant. (The 100 BP I had on my Carlson would have been GREAT ON IT....)

Peter:

As I recall, that older Merc 850 weighs about 260-270 lbs. Our 1960 G-3 had a 1960 Johnson 75 V-4 on it years ago and handled it fine. They weighed around 240-250 lbs. In my opinion, if you get near or above 300 pounds that is too much weight for a "stock"
G-3 Transom. Many of the members here have reinforced their transoms if they want to run the bigger, heavier motors.

The 62-64 L6 850 and 1000 are 246 lbs for the long shaft... so around 240ish for the short shaft. Bandit wears a short shaft plus about a 40 lb CMC tilt and trim. I wouldn't go any heavier setup on the G3.

I have on another boat a 2005 Etec 50 long shaft that weighs in at about 240 lbs. The Etec is a great motor, but not available in short shaft... and not near as snarly as an L6... :)
