Jeff,
BOTH videos are very cool!
Both Gz look GREAT!
Yopu've really got both hulls performing VERY well.
I wish you could put your magic touch on Wild Thanggg for me.
I hope to find some good water like that before winter sets in.
How long of a run are you taking before you turn around?
How are you securing the camera to the deck, etc??? Very cool.
The dang wakeboard boats around here make it real dangerous once they come out.
Thanks for posting the videos!!!

I will get a better vid of Reggie as the lake thins out, even the pontoon boats are dangerous here, they leave tq rollers that are fun to jump IF you know their there.

Now the camera....man I love the camera!!! its a gopro sport, it has alot of what we need for boat movies, water proof! several ways to attach,ie suction cup,and misc stick on clips etc. no film, just a SD card. I got about 2.5 hrs on each trip. Conrad has one,he took some real cool vids of his contender. CK ebay, I got mine for 237.00

Mike, Peg is a 1960 centerdeck-no rubrail, its bonded with glass. it has an 8" pad,a 19.5" transom,a 69 merc 1250 short, spinning a 14x24 chopper @ 5200rpm+- depends on amount of trim+fuel.runs high 50s-low 60s again depending on t&t and fuel load, funny thing is that Reggie runs low 50s and has 2 less cyls 1 less carb,no pad and spins a 14x22 chopper, Oh and I put a HOOK in reggies hull, ya on purpose!....lol.

Jeff I sometimes wonder if I should leave the hook in mine, was going to repair that but seems what they say, to make sure the last three feet are perfectly flat is a bit bogus as mine ran great with a 1/2-3/4" hook before I even knew what it meant,Ha. Liked the vid ride and camera set up too :) Takes forever with dial-up but I just let it load and go to HD and see quite a bit upon return and was well worth the wait.

Do you have any pictures of the "pad" on Peg?? Are you running a stock lower unit or does it have the lower water pickup?

Ya thats ugly peg 3 paint jobs ago. with her Flying scott 60hp. By the way she ran 44 mph with that 23" transom height. and the scott has a 17.5" leg height, cooled perfectly too.

Was the pad worthwhile to put on, in your opinion? What benefits did you get out of it? I found your thread on it from a few years back over on Scream and Fly. Most of the guys on there seem to be anti-G3 when it comes to going fast in a boat...

I'm still up in the air with what I'm going to do with my G3. Actually thought about selling it... I want to go fast with minimal effort. :P

I think you might consider a vintage 1000 for the g3 and should make you very happy. If I came across a '63 or 4 would get one for me :) You've only had that 35hp anchor on there and what you expect, downer  Even a 650 gets the blood flow'n...

Your right but the younger crowd and others wants speed no matter what, so what ya going to do? ;) Even in the 60's people were dumping there 35's for 65's and higher once they found it was a pain to ski without enough power. :S Although I like to watch fast g3's I have no need and do like the power but for pulling and acceleration :woohoo: If I find a 1500XS cheap I'll get it though.LOL

Cool?? Absolutely!

I got a LOT of compliments and "Wow, what's that??'s" on the looks of the combo. I was constantly having people come up to me at the ramps asking me for the story on it. Almost to the point it was borderline annoying... :P

Functional and fun? Not so much.

Top speed was only in the mid 20's with that particular motor. We played around with props and setup(mostly engine height) a little bit and never got much more than that out of it. And that was with just me in it and a tank of fuel. Load it up with another person, a couple chairs, tools and an ice chest and it became even slower. Nothing wrong with that but let's be realistic, fast is fun! There is no doubt with some additional tweaking, there would have been a potential for a little more speed but I did not want to keep polishing a turd, so to speak, when I would never attain what I really wanted with that particular motor. I won't put another G3 on the water unless I can get a solid and safe 50+ MPH out of it.

I pulled the 35 off of the G3 to put it on the "Cheap Bass Turd"(1965 Glasspar GoldCup) to make an inexpensive ocean runner out of it. We used the heck out of that combo, until I replaced the 35 with a 50 last month. The G3 got tarped and tucked away into the back yard for a later date. Not sure what I'm going to do with that 35 yet...

The yellow boat(1970 Challenger) you see in my avatar will likely be retired here in the next few years and when it does, the motor(1970 Merc 1350 in nearly mint condition) will find its way onto another boat... either a G3 or a Carlson Contender(if one plops into my lap for little coin). I'd rather have the Contender for the fact that they are quick hulls out of the box. I'd rather have a G3 for the fact that they will handle chop better than the Contender. The G3s have the potential to be fast but require a little more massaging to accomplish it safely, at least, in my opinion.

As you see, I'm very indecisive about everything and kinda make it up as I go. Boating plans change on almost a daily basis. :P

No point really except I agree, just a thought on the 35. My uncle had a Wolverine think 15' and he put a new 35hp Evinrude Lark I think it was? More squared off than yours and had chrome trim. At the Salton Sea he put most the family in the solid wood planked boat, at least 6-7 and I was under the bow as a teen, he had to ski behind cause no room inside. It wasn't fast as I remember but it was almost to slow to ski, for the long ride to the camp site he had the ski rope handle between his legs to save the arms. Had to have alot of slack in the rope to get a snap up wheather from the beach or dead pull out but I couldn't get up that way till the 650 Merc. So just my thought is it had power but not much speed with more than two I suppose but did alot of skiing with it for 20-30 years. Fun days but would have been better with a Merc 650 or more! :woohoo:

To get a g3 up to spds of 50+ is realy pretty easy but you do loose some of the fun of driving, a strait hull without ANY rocker will get you there with 85hp and up with good ballance of batt-fuel-seats etc. Im taking off the 125 and going smaller next year, in fact Im thinking of trying o get a few of us to go low....make a hp limit of,say 45hp and have a contest to see who can get the most spd using that hp or under. i bet I could get spds of 40-43 mph, striped down and realy ballancing the boat, it would be a fun challenge.
I find its mostly ballance and prop, Reggie is only 4-6 mph slower than Ugly Peg and much more fun to drive, and less fuel burnt isnt a problem either. the 125 realy has a brutal punch to it at any spd say at 35 and punch it in seconds your flying @ 60+, the bad is ruff water, any....ANY wave might kill you , through you out of the boat....flip you or just make you soil yourself........they where rated at 55hp in the center deck and 65 in the open deck. That means Reggie is over powerd by 30 and Peg by a whopping 70hp. If you want to realy go fast get somthing that is supposed to go that fast by design.....ya I know practice what I preach....lol

Re:The fastest G3 in the MID West 13 years 2 months ago #45257

Jeff- great videos!!!

I too agree that if you are looking to really fly in a small boat do it in one that was designed to. I have had a bunch of Hydrostream Vipers with everything from inline 6's to hopped up V6's. With an inline 115 and the right setup you can see mid 70's, and safely.

Now- don't throw it back at me when I finally get around to my G3 project and bolt the 1500xs I have on the back :-)
