Just google
DIY jack plate, there are several hits that all have fairly decent designs/plans. Several of them are very detailed.

What boat & motor combo?

Note: I wouldn't DIY a plate for a go fast boat or a motor bigger then say a 75hp +/- w/out KNOWING that it'd be able to stand up to the weight, torque & etc a large hp motor will put on it.

There's a place in TN that makes one with minimal set-back (4"), but I can't find their listing right now. This one pops up on the search, not sure the materials to build one would cost you much more than that?

My Texas Made Impala is rated to 85 hp. The problem is I have a long shaft Scott Atwater 75 and a short shaft transom. I have already strenthened the transom at several locations so 75 hp will pose no problem.

I'm sorry I meant knowing the DIY fab'd jack plate would stand up to use w/ a large motor. Since I am neither an engineer or an aluminum fab wizard :)

Mark's ebay link sounds pretty interesting. And much more adjustable then most of the DIY plates you can find thru a google search. He's probably right that it's about the same cost as all the raw materials alone.

If you go straight bolt up, minimal (no) adjustment, you might be a good bit lower for materials. So it's a trade off.....

The jack plate will only be used for vertical adjustment. I`m not an engineer either just a guy that has built a couple of boats. Doug Young has one of the aluminum boats my brothers and I built.

frogman:

I have never built a jackplate, but we do have a "Bob's Machine Hydraulic Jackplate" on our 1960 Glasspar G-3. We are very happy with it and "Bob's Machine" is an excellent company to deal with. Customer service is excellent. They also sell manual jackplates like the one Mark posted.

I have posted a couple pictures of our unit for you to see below.
BTW,....here is a link to their website if you are interested:

Frogman, one thing I really like about our jackplate is it only has a 3 7/8" setback which is pretty minimal for these units.

Good looking unit redg3, but that will cost more than I've got invested in the motor. I picked the motor up at the Witcha Falls auction for $40.
I am a low budget (cheap) boater. I`ve only got $400 invested in the whole rig.

Thanks Frogman!

Yes, your right, the jackplate we have is not the cheapest but still of excellent quality. I hear you on being a "low budget boater."

Take care Sir!

You bet I can wait. It has already hit 80F down here in Dallas. I will work on bringing the Scott back to life till I hear from you. I have a Gale/Sea King 35 on the Impala now. It will be exciting to double my HP. Whooo Hoooo.

Man I really hate that you have a problem like that. Down here if we catch the theif at it we are legal to pratice some shooting.
Any way many thanks for trying. New to me, using a snowmobile to check inventory. My place is small enough to chuck a rock across it.
Again many thanks for the effort.

Where are you at? Dad had 80 acres north of Springfield Mo. The place next to him had a turkey roost that 2ft of droppings under it. Never wanted for good hunting till he passed.

We`ve got a travel trailer on the Brazos down by Cleburn and get there just about every other weekend. 30+ deer in the local heard that bed down 100ft from our rig.

That's one of the nicer units I've seen John, you did well finding that one! I also love the story about everyone telling you a jack plate wouldn't perform well on your boat, but tried it anyway and it worked out fine. Sometimes you just have to try something different and it works. ;)
