TOPIC: Any reasons not to run a bead of silicone?

Any reasons not to run a bead of silicone? 12 years 4 months ago #63719

Hello to all;

My 1960 Texas Maid Fiesta has been a great boat, and doesn't leak, much.
It does seep a little; not much for a 50 year old rivetted aluminum boat, but enough to add up over a weekend on the lake.

Would it harm the boat to run a small bead of clear silicone along the
seams? I've refrained from silly cone, but this last weekend I sure did get to use the bilge pump I wired in when I put in the new floor.

All opinions welcome, and thanks!
Alan

Calan,

Silicone will peel up after a short while. My nephew went to our local prop shop and they told him of a paste that is used to seal the seams and riviots.

It has been on his boat for five or so years and still holding. Neither of us can remember what its called but get a hold of a repair shop and they should know about it.

I think Littlefin is right, the general consensus is that silicone won't hold over a long period of time. There's a product called Gluvit that gets pretty good reviews on long term sealing;

There's also a (green?) epoxy stick you melt with a torch to seal aluminum rivets and seams, etc. I've seen at some of the marine stores, but I haven't heard if it really works well or not.

Thanks!

I'll track some Gluvit down and check it out.
Never heard of it, but I'll give it a shot and report back.

Appreciated!
