My Dad is looking for a newer Merc, 25-40 hp for his Herter boat.Since he sometimes uses it in Florida he is looking for something that can stand up to saltwater a little better than his old '63 35hp one did. Does anyone know what year Mercury started using better materials for corrosion protection? Thanks

On older Mercury motors they started using stainless shafts towards the late 70's.
76 or 77 I think.

Thank you professor. We have been looking at late '80's motors, now I have to be careful about weights. Is there anywhere I can look up weights of older motors? The old Herter boat has a very low transom and narrow stern.

Many older motors are lighter than today's " new motors "
many people are not aware of this. A late 80's 35 HP ( 150 LBS ) is essentially the same motor as the 63 35 HP.
The 2 cylinder 35 OMC of 82 is listed in the brochure at 120 LBS
