Went shopping over Thanksgiving in the Portland area. I picked up a 1964 Merc 1000 short and a 1964 1000 long shaft with controls. I spent some time on the phone with Thom and he helped me out by answering all my questions. Thank you again Thom. These are my first Towers and I will no doubt be needing some guidance.
Coming from a 1956 30 horse Sea Horse, this should wake the Fantasy up!  Neil |

Nice (TWICE!) score Neil, you're gonna love 'em! I'd spring for the good shop manual, if you haven't already done so. (If a bonehead like me can get a 62 Merc 700FGS running after sitting up for 25+ years, it's gotta be the way to go. LOL)

I have not bought a manual yet. Which one is the one that you are referring to? I was going to pick up the Seeloc, is there better? Speaking of books, Iron Fist-The lives of Carl Kiekhaefer is a must read. Neil |

I bought the Factory book from:
store.eastcoastmarineservice.com/product_p/90-25500.htm Kinda pricey, but I figured Merc folks would be the ones to look to for the right info. (These manuals also come up on ebay once in a while, just have to watch for them.) That source also carries "The Iron Fist" and several other books on the subject. The one drawback is that they refer to "Merc test tool # so-and-so", where the Seloc may be more generic, geared to the non-factory mechanic. I don't know for sure, only have experience with the one book. Just make sure you get the one that covers "up to 1965", there are differences in the newer models as I understand it. PS - There may be somebody here who has one they could sell you, now would be a good time for them to chime in here! LOL Just letting you know where I got mine.  |

NEIL : CONGRATS , great combo . really like the mist Green color . Not sure if you are keepin.
. While the hull is getting Winter restore, think about adding a dashboard or control lever "Kill lanyard" Clip teather , like the modern Jet Ski come equipt. Sets a good example , or some shows / rallys may require before you can enter / run.! IMO Had a member story here in past when he got ejected on 1st trial run, solo test maybe a Tuesday am , if you recall reading the story . It did have a good or funny ending, but most times it gets EXPENSIVE. ENJOY |

Im glad people remember my story Split. It scared me enough to change the way I do things. 18 bucks is cheap insurace to rig a kill switch.
ANywho, Neil that is a cool boat. If you can get ahold of a 23 or so cleaver that boat would love it I bet! run the motor up 2-3 inches and hang on. Conrad |

Hi mark,
I also have a 62 Merc 700 FGS. I need to work on it next spring. It is in storage now. Blew a rotor. Replaced it .Only get spark on 3 cyc. I hope it is something minor.

Hey Dave!,
Those are great old motors, really sorry I sold mine. There must have been a mid-year production change in '62, mine had the water pickup in the trim tab behind the prop instead of the sides of the gearcase. Other than that, they look identical. I'm far from an expert on them, but I do believe that on the dual point distributor and two coil setups...........no, I'm going to let one of the guys who knows these motors help you diagnose this problem. I think each set of points, condenser, and coil fires three cylinders each - but I'm not sure. How 'bout it Mercaholics, can one of you jump in here and help a buddy out? (Sorry we're sidetracking your thread here Neil, hope you don't mind!) |

Lanyard is a good idea.I did read that thread and I am glad everything turned out ok. Not sure on the color choice yet. All my other rides and tow vehicle are shades of blue. They all match my brides eyes. Milkdud With a 23 clever, what would you think for top end? It is 15 foot and I am around 180. Mark Not to worry about the side track. If you have one bad coil / point set / condenser or bad rotor, it will run on the 3 cylinders, fired by the other set.
Clean and set the points as the first step. |

I did a wet compression check on the shorty this weekend. When I bought it the guy said 75 to 90 across all six.
Here is what I got wet.(5 to 6 drops of oil in each hole) #1. 110 #2. 112 #3. 114 #4. 103 #5. 108 #6. 110 I have not got a manual yet, wife wanted all the info about the manual, huuuum, Christmas gift I would bet. I will start with the teardown/inspection when I get the manual. Neil |

Neil, just a rough guess for speed, Id say somewhere between 51-55mph with the prop I mentioned.
Those compression numbers, would be good taking it apart and inspecting the pistons/rings. It probably has some stuck rings. If thats the only problem re ring it hone it and run it. New seals top and bottom a must too.Conrad |

Thanks for the input.At least there is not a dead hole. I looked into the intake port covers on the top two banks. The skirts look good, no major scratches or scuffing. It will be after Christmas when I start the teardown. I will post the pics and will hopefully get guidance through the teardown and rebuild. This is gonna be fun. I had to order parts from a boat shop here for another motor I am working on for a gentleman. I asked the mechanic about this 64 1000 and he came off rather negative toward the "old" Merc sixes. This surprised me. Not sure if it was his personal opinion or something along the lines of not being able to sell a bunch of parts for his employer due to discontinuation. Interesting. Oh well, when I pass him at the lake I will just smile and wave. Neil |

Well I just couldn't wait.
Started the teardown. It has been sitting with Marvel in the holes for about a week. I did another com. test and they were all within 5 to six lbs. of the first check. Hole #4 had me puzzled. When I got the exhaust side tore off, I found a pretty significant groove in the wall of #4. At 46 years old I myself had a few "grooves in the walls" I ran out of time. The rotating assembly is next. I will keep the pics coming.

Looks like your ahead of me. I guess I'll be watching yours. LOL Yours is definitely in better shape compression wise. I think I may just do what Conrad and Thom said and see if I can get mine running to losen up the rings and see what I get. Bob |

I have been watching your progress and reading along. I am learning plenty. I removed the lower and opened up the water pump first. One broken stud, easy fix. The housing itself has a couple little dings but only cosmetic stuff. I removed the drain plug and it was bone dry. Lots of old gear lube leaked out over the years of sitting. Inspection and reseal are in order there. 
When I picked up this motor I also snagged a long shaft same year, one will die as a donor. Learning, learning, learning. Lots of fun. I am not sure of hole #4 yet, hoping for good news when I get inside the case. Elgindave Just finishing up my "man cave/motor room". Trying my best to keep it organized and clean. Neil, did you try poking a wire or small screwdriver (gently) into the gear lube drain hole? When I first got mine, I didn't get any lube out when the plug was pulled. I figured just like you, it was dry. Old stiff (possibly neglected) gear lube can form a "skin" or semi-solid glob in the bottom, hindering the draining process. A pal suggested the "probe", and wala, it finally drained. (NASTY stuff, have the drain pan ready!)

I'll give 'er a poke and see what I get. It looks like the lower was white. Mercury never used white primer did they? My Mercruiser lowers have green primer. Are there #'s stamped somewhere indicating the year of the lower unit? Neil |

There was probably green primer under the "Cloud White" paint on yours. I'm not sure on the exact year Merc towers switched to "Phantom" black, I think it was around 1964? I don't know of any stampings (numbers) in the gearcases to determine their age, but the experts here can help with further info. The motor's serial number can be referenced here to check on the year;

Nice we'll learn together! I have to look up inside my midsection, mine didn't have the water tube attached to the lower like yous does. Mine might be stuck in the midsection or it's different for the 1000's. Mine is definitely NOT the original lower and it looks like it was done half assed when they put it on. I too pulled the drain plug and got nothing. I'll have to try Mark's suggestion about the wire, all though I'm expecting nothing to come out. Looking around in the lower I'm seeing a lot of sand so.... I'm really hoping it isn't up in the block! I think once I connect a garden hose to the water inlet pipe I should be able to flush it. Just too darn cold right now.Bob |

ALL 1000's were Black. THe first 1000 was 1962 and it started the black way of thinking for Mercury. Most of the other motors in the line up followed suit quickly.
Story was when they started building bigger motors, they thought white was adding to the "bulk" of the big motors. A suggestion was given to try black, because the color black is slimming. It did and now we have black Mercury's. Conrad |

Would you please post a picture of the lower unit so that I can see where the propshaft enters the unit? It doesn't look right from what I can see, unless you have already started to remove the propshaft. One this is for sure about the lower unit. It is a '62-'64ish, because it has water pick-up holes on each side and is not cast for an exhaust tuner tube. I 'think' '65 was the first year of tuner tubes, maybe '66?? I 'think '61 was the last year that the water pick-up was from the holes in the trim tab, nrrowing this case down to '62-'64. Am I close guys?? I agree with Conrad in that I think the 1000 was black in '62 and then all Mercs were black in '63. |

Some old promotional ads have the 1962 1000 with the water pick up in the trim tab. I do think there were a few produced, just not many. I still do not have a 1962 1000. Id like to have one someday. Conrad |

I pulled the plug on the gearcase as per Mark's suggestion.
No obstructions, no gear oil, empty. Thom, I will get a couple of shots of the gearcase and post them tomorrow. A little sidetrack here, but still a Merc. Looked at a early Seaswirl 16' to 17' today with a Mark55A hanging on it. Has'nt been wet since '04. The guy says he wants $500. I have to broom the snow off and get some more info and pics. I did not find anything about Seaswirl in the Library. I was driving down an alley looking(imagine that!) and this little Cloud White Merc whispered "hey, I'm over here". The little shaver is cuter than my prom date. She just may end up in the stable. Thanks for all the help guys. Neil |

When I got it the nut was tight and locked. I had only taken the nut and prop off. So it may have been run that way. Neil Happy Holidays |

I have a '63 850 and it is white. I believe the 1000 was black that year and the rest followed suit the next year.
This is a great site and I have learned a lot already. It is nice to know of a place where you can get your questions answered and not have to feel like an idiot for not knowing the answer already. Bill |

I am not quite sure how to post a picture, but we will see if this works. It is on a '59 Thompson Sea Lancer. The boat and motor are in great shape with little more than general maintenance needed. It runs great. I haven't done a compression check yet, but plan on doing one soon just so I know. If the picture doesn't post, I will try again later.

Lets try this again. I found some more wonderful help elsewhere on this site, so maybe this will work. The boat was owned by a neighbor to our cottage on the Mississippi since about 1970. I have a couple pictures of 6 of us skiing behind it in the mid '70's. I have owned it for about 3 years and have had alot of fun. It never fails to get compliments
