Hi,
To agree with Mark, yes a 1980 OMC V4 tachometer would read the alternator. The "blue stripe" Mercury started in 1972. Although the OMC tachometer will not work with the 1972-early 1979 Mercury ignition system, the tachometer sender wire (under the motor cowling) can simply be moved to connect at the rectifier. You should not assume, but Mercury did just that on the assembly line starting with the 1975 year model. So, you may not need to make any changes for correct operation.
