TOPIC: 1959 Mark 55A Disassembly

1959 Mark 55A Disassembly 6 years 6 months ago #134388

Regards. I am new to Mercury's but reasonably handy with Johnyrudes...
Starting a minor disassemble a Mark 55 for cleaning. Is it easier to disconnect the choke solenoid power source and leave it attached to the top engine cover? these Mercs seem "tight" to work on...

they have either a eye bolted or a knife connect under a rubber most likely. leave the solenoid and don't forget the ground wire.

Thanks. I assumed there might be a way to disconnect under the rubber sleeve. The ground is attached at the solenoid mount but broken free on the other end...

the broken end attaches to the bolt that hold the mag adjustment plate on. must be grounded to work the choke.

I managed to disassemble and repair the recoil and clean everything up. The lower unit drain plug is missing so it has been without gear oil for a while. I pulled the lower unit and inspected the impeller - will change it before I run it. While cleaning it the shift cams came off and hadn't marked their orientation. So... my next question is - do the shift cams need to be aligned a specific way on the shaft? The engine was in neutral.

Figured it out... Put the top cam in the housing with a bit of grease and the engine tipped up horizontal. Then slid on the lower unit. I was careful to line up the water tube and it slid together nicely. Shifts into forward neutral and reverse now.

Yes but does the reverse locks work right. that is what the shift cams do.

Humph. Not sure. Prop spins freely both ways in neutral, neither way in forward, and will click as turning clockwise in reverse...

when you tilt the motor down do the hooks go over the tilt pin? and when you put it in neutral do they stay engaged?

They seem engaged in forward and not in reverse. So that would not be right...

Okay. Can you explain how the lower cam can be correctly aligned?
