TOPIC: fuel pump info.

fuel pump info. 13 years 6 months ago #18317

We have a 1957 Evinrude motor that was designed with a pressurized fuel system, which did not require a fuel pump. Is there a way to convert this engine to use a fuel pump?

Yep, you can add a later style fuel pump to the intake port cover. Also, you'd need to plug off the air line from the pressure system. I have a conversion kit available - let me know if interested...

Chinewalker,Rick here.I don't want to over ride
this post, but you always seem to know these engines
as so many here do.I posted awhile back my problem
with my 61 Evinrude Lark III 40hp.It was running ok
until last time out.Engine would bog down in gear,
when shifted to neutral it would clear up,run fine for
a few minutes then seem to starve for fuel and cut out.
Now it won't start.Fuel now seems to be comming out of
carb through butterfly.I am going to change squeeze ball,
looks original.check plugs,I have been using regular staybil in
the last 2 tanks.I heard Seafoam is the way to go.Any
ideas, seems like something is in fuel line or in carb,
I'm not the best mechanic, can I drain carb to see if I
picked up and dirt.

thanks for any help

Rick

Yes, that would be great! I'm interested. If you can, email me a price. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. Thanks, Jerry Haynes

Rick,
The squeeze bulb would have nothing to do with your carb leaking fuel. Sounds to me like you, at minimum, need to have the carb disassembled and cleaned. Preferably, you should install a modern ethanol resistant carb kit in the process. Check your float to make sure it actually floats, too.
As a rule, I do not run any additives in my fuel unless I am specifically treating the engine for some reason, .ie running BRP Carbon Guard to clean out carbon. I run my stuff often enough that the fuel doesn't tend to get stale. I have found that vented plastic tanks tend to take in water much more easily than the old OMC steel tanks that vent only when the fuel line is plugged in. With the ethanol blends that is a bigger problem than it used to be. I do add Stabil to my tanks for offseason storage.

Sounds like you got some dirt or something stuck in the float valve. Pull the carb and sprey it all out with carb cleaner. That means taking it all apart. Anything you can see that will come apart take it out. Check to make sure everything is open. These carb are real easy to take apart and clean. When you put the float all back togather turn upside down and the float should be leavel. With it upside down blow in the fuel inlet I do this by mouth and see if any air gets past the valve if no air gets past it is seating and should not over flow.
