TOPIC: 1968 Sears McCulloch 45hp #68604533 the good, bad

1968 Sears McCulloch 45hp #68604533 the good, bad 13 years 6 months ago #18065

I found this motor on Craigslist for $100 Suppose to run, lower unit leaks a little and needs resealed.
A few questions

1. when I tried to start it I hooked up cables to bat. and jumped the solenoid and didn't get spark. Do I need to give it power elsewhere (the 4 wire plug) to get spark?

2. What is the rep for these motors? Is it worth putting money in?

3. What controls can I use?

Thank You for any help, tips and warnings. If I should run from it please tell me now. It will be going on a '57 Winner Sabre.

Did you receive any of the remote start wiring with the motor?

Below is the wiring diagram which might be of some help.

Thanks for the wiring diagram. I bought the manuals from ebay on CD and printed them out.

I got it fired up and running, seem to run fine.

I talked to the Scottatwater guy that TallTexan suggested and he said he has any parts that I need, which is comforting.
Now the search for controls and cables

Thanks Ponyboy, is it possible to get a picture of the cable ends motor side and how they are mounted to motor? I'm watching some on ebay now.

There are a couple things to consider on your controls. What lenght cables do you need. Do not buy them to short. Scott motors have two different size balls for hook up to the motor. I think yours is the small ones.

Del,
Thanks for posting some pictures. I now know that I'm missing the bracket on the front of the motor that holds the cable. This also the first that I have seen cables with the ball. I messured the cables that was on the Winner and they was 7'. Can I get cables that would work with the J/E Simplex controls?

I believe me and Del has worked out the Controls.

Now on to the leaking lower unit, When I first got the motor about a week ago I cleaned all the old gear lube off the LU and filled her up with new. Now that shes sat for a week the only leak I see is coming from what looks like a vent on the left side and nowhere else. Is this caused by bad O-rings?
Also I don't have the wiring harness that runs from the motor to the dash. I rigged up a flat four trailer plug for now while I search for a harness.

The weep hole looks like it is leaking unburned fuel/oil mix - not uncommon on a 2-stroke outboard... Only ways to check the lower unit itself for leaks (other than an obvious one where you can see it leaking out of a sealed area) is to either pressure test it or use it and check the oil afterwards for water.

I had a shift shaft Oring leak like that once. I could ask if it is new oil leaking?

It's New oil, the motor has less than a minute of run time on it since I got it and hasn't ran for years before that. I'm going to replace the impeller and reseal the lower unit before it see the lake.
