Just about finished removeing everything before I get to the real dirty stuff of the resto.
I just got a couple of screws holding the rub rail on and was looking for any suggestions I can use to condition it as it sits waiting to be put back on.

can you store them in the rafters up in the garage?

I have mine sitting in the rafters of my garage... out of the way, can't get bent up.

Strike that.. reverse it... didn't read the rest of your post...

Seriously... a very good auto restorer suggested for me to use the following to condition some of my dry rubber parts on my Bel Air...

Go to the Supermarket - the cleaning section.

Buy a bottle of Lestoil... it is a household cleaner.

Clean the part with mild soapy water.. then apply a liberal amount of Lestoil to a rag and whipe the part down, leaving a slight film.

Do this night after night, DO NOT SOAK THE PART in lestoil... this will ruin the part.

After a week or so of this, the part will regain its resiliency.. and be plyable once again.. you can do this to any old rubber part.

I have not tried this, but trust the source. Can't hurt to try... and I am not sure about using it on a WHITE part... as opposed to black rubber... as with anything, try in a SMALL spot first to make sure it will do your part good.

CHEERS!

If your rib rail is the rubber kind and has the weater cracks I used my small sander with 80 grit and sanded it nice and smoth. Suer make it look like new again. Rafters or any other place to keep it from getting damaged.
