Yep...and we used to use paper bags to buff out furniture...

My mother uses only newspaper and Windex to clean glass, swears by it.
Cigarette ashes will buff the heck out of silver also.

Scotch Brite pads are nice for that, they don't clog like sand paper, and come in different coarses.

I like to use a drywall hand sander with drywall sanding screens for sanding plastics, fillers, etc, don't clog and comes in different grits. When one side gets dull flip the screen and use the other side.

Never use a natural sponge to wash your boat, car, etc. Thousands of little bones in the sponge will really scratch up your finish.

One guy I know swears by putting his varnish in the freezer before he applies it to a boat. On horizontal surfaces, it will skin and flow evenly forming a glass like finish in just one coat.
