TOPIC: Two subjects on Mark 58

Re:Two subjects on Mark 58 12 years 11 months ago #51818

90 is low it will run, maybe hard starting, personally I dont run anything under 100psi and if its that low chances are the seals are old and worn and I wouldnt trust my summer on it.... rings & seals minimum

choke is blue

Ill post you a wiring diagram shortly

The 90 reading on all four seemed strange to me, getting exactly the same is not normal at least not for any tests I've taken befor. I suspect I am not getting a good seal on my tester. The threaded portion is longer than the plug threads and I didn't want to screw it in too far and damage the piston. Going to chop off a small portion of garden hose to use as a big "O" ring and try again.

Madprops you nailed it again. Blue for the choke, needled into the wire and touched it with a pos wire and the choke clicked right in position, now I know the button is bad. Found my really old compression tester in a bucket, the kind with a rubber end that you have to hold in the hole and took new readings. Got between 115 and 120 on all holes, surprised me trying to keep the tester shoved tight while turning the key. The cylinders were loaded with fogging oil, so much it was running out. Got up the nerve, squirted a tough of ether in each hole, put the plugs in and turned it over, One revolution and she fired right up WHOOO HOOO! You wouldn't believe the smoke in my basement right now, had to turn on the exhaust fan I use when I paint. I think the oil is still smouldering, probably will for a few days. Now I know the motor fires up I'll hang it on the back of the boat so I can fit the steering setup.
Thanks to all.

good going, always fun when they first fire

edit: not all testers will read the same, yours may read low? its more important that the are with 5% of each other

Glad to read you making progress Cal.
I just went through the "smoke filled shop" myself with an 800.
Gotta love that smell. ;)

Its always a good idea to test the smoke alarms before Christmas anyway.

Another query on the wiring for the controls. Going to put a different key switch on the dash. There are six wires in the harness going to the shifter/ignition. I traced them with an ohm meter and here's what I came up with.
Blue-choke (thank you madprops)
Green-hot from battery
Red-to solenoid
White and yellow both ground to the motor and the Mag.
Black- I cannot find anywhere it terminates and get no reading on the meter.

My key switch is labeled B-G-M-S-Blank

B would be Green wire?
S would be red wire?
M would be either white or yellow? (shut down)
G would be either white or yellow?
Blank could be the Acc lead?

Here's where I plan to mount the key and choke.

Cal, I believe black is ground in all mercury controls

OK, I'm gunna keep pickin' your brains. Dropped the lower unit to pull the impeller, came upon this little jewel, not like the omc's I'm used to working on.
Does this thing unscrew? if so counter clockwise like a normal thing? Spending some time looking for a pin/spanner wrench to fit it.

Another thing, What's this screw for, will the lower blow up if I loosen it???

Re:Two subjects on Mark 58 12 years 11 months ago #52032

standard thread rotation, you need a tool, you can buy one from one of the members (John Macintosh) on johnsoldmercurysite.com

you can also make a tool from a adj spanner wrench drilled with a couple case hardened bolts driven in the holes

the screw you refer to is a grease cover plug

to install a new impeller
I use the cutoff end of an electrical conduit...I use a hose clamp to compress the blades then press the impeller into the conduit....using a felt marker clock the conduit with the installed impeller then I use a pipe that will slide over the drive shaft to drive the impeller into place

yes it does and that screw is the vent for the grease fill.

You guys come up with all the neat ways of doing things. on the omc's I'd take crisco, mazola oil or some other cooking oil and keep bending each tine until it was set in place, your way is much easier. Tks.
Thought Harbor Freight would have spanners but did not, I'll make my own, not a problem.

I'd go with the pricey one as I broke my Cover and it cost as much as the tool to replace, on the first one I did. My cover was beat up from the previous owner using a punch on it but still Go with the good tool. I couldnt get a good solid enguagement with a Spanner just cnat get the right presure on it to not mess up the aluminum cover... In my opinion.

Cal
I have had a couple wp cover plates I couldnt remove with that beefy tool and had to destroy them to get them out....buy the tool and sell it when done if need be

even with this tool & heat do not be suprised if you need someone to stand on the lower unit on the grass and use a 5 ft cheater bar on the end of the tool

Id loan you mine but the postage to ship across country would cost the same for your own your tool

I made one like the merc tool. I have a handle on it 2 feet long made out of 2 inch steel . Once in place on the bench I wack the end of the steel arm with a 4 lb hammer. The shock breaks them loose.

I'm thinking of making one out of schedule 40 pipe and welding two 1/4" studs on it to match the holes and use a 30" pipe wrench for the torque. Why are those things in there so tight?? Seems a little overkill

MIne was just coroded in place... I think tightening is also the direction the engine runs so that may make it tighter.. , Be carefull with threaded studs as they will really chew up the cap...

Re:Two subjects on Mark 58 12 years 11 months ago #52083

These covers are not installed " too tight "
What happens is that corrosion takes place.
With aluminum it is that white powedery stuff.
With iron it is that brown stuff.
Rust is really iron oxide and the white powder is aluminum oxide.
What has happened is that oxygen has joined up with the parent metal and thus there is more material there.
There is not a lot of room in the threads and nature really knows how to pack the oxygen in there , even to the point of cracking the housing.
Hope this helps.

Do yourself a favor and weld 4 studs on there. Most times you will just twist off 2 studs .

I have 4 studs on my wrench made of standard grade 1/4 inch bolts and they bend on the hard jobs. I need to update it with harder bolts.

OOOOOPS... I read the last few posts too late.

If you can put up with my lousey pictures and do not look at my spatter welding, I'm not a welder believe me.

Maybe I was lucky and everything was pretty well soaked with oil and there is no corrosion.

When I read the last few posts I already had the impeller out, darn...

I found an old 2 1/4" nipple in an old bucket, welded two 1/4" bolts in it, if welded is the proper term, more like attached.
The size is perfect to fit the holes on the cap.

A little carefull turn and the thing came loose without even so much as a protest.

The impeller is soft and supple but I'm changing it anyway because it has a pretty good set to it. Part # 18-3007.

Look past the junky toolwork bench after all it is work time.

The home made "tool"

Everything needed to do the job.

Inside is not scored or scratched.

The copper cooling tube was packed tight with seaweed.

That impeller was definitely a goner!

When you reassemble, spread a thin coating of Permatex #3 Aviation-Type gasket dressing (the stuff in a brush-on can) on the pump cover threads, this will seal them and keep Nasty Stuff out.

In the future, if the cover is ever hard coming off, a slight application of heat will release it easily.

Wish the ones I have would come apart like that, they're all Salty Dogs out here and require Heavy Artillery to dismantle!

Cheers........ed

I'm beginning to wonder if my "Mark 58AE" is a real one or a conglomerate of parts. The black top, white shaft, black bottom. The mark 58 is stamped on the white transom bracket like normal but it seems that the wiring schematics that were linked here for the marks don't follow through with what I have. I have another shifter set with cables (green type) that I think I will trace wires on and see how different they are from what I have with the black shift setup. Going to take me awhile to work this out. Would there be a separate schematic for the 58, I see references to the rectifier and to avoid reversing battery terminals but no wires leading to or from it, No mention of magnito or do they just call it the distributor? Time to put on a google search again.

Cal

I posted the wiring diagram for your motor on the that Mercury site where you requested the diagram

the mag has 3 wires 1 is a ground strap, the mercury tilt kill switch , the other a KILL wire beige/salmon color wire to the key switch...I think check the schematic I posted for you

Don't have the kill switch, someone must have taken it off. Here is a picture that was sent to me from another site, just what I had in mind. Maybe someone here could use it also.
Thanks for the info.

Madprops, I don't plan on rollling over anytime soon so the switch won't be necessary, thanks anyway. I think I have my wire route and colors figured out now. With a combo of the pictures and schematics. Did a lot of turning and switching and pickin' with my ohm meter on the old and new ign switches. What threw me off was one of the schematics mentioned positive ground so I did a lot of back tracing to make sure my wiring would be correct. The black shifter case and levers will be up for grabs for anyone who wants it sans the ign and choke buttons.

Re:Two subjects on Mark 58 12 years 11 months ago #52286

Cal its not for roll overs, its for hitting submerged obstructions, it kills the motor in the up position so you dont over rev it and it starts when the motor drops back down

Cool, never thought of that. I was interested in the jumper wire from the rectifier to the hot battery lead in the later models. Would that be something worth looking into? I'm more of a cruiser than a speed person, probably a result of OMC addiction. Back in the 50's it was the Mercs that were the fast ones. Used to go to the shell races with my high school buddies and the rudes were always the brides maids.
