Talked to Tim via email. He watched the video and agrees with Dave, thinks it sounds like it's running on 3 instead of all 6.

So I hooked up my spark test light to each of the plugs and got a light when turning the motor over. Kind of expected lights on 1,3,5 or 2,4,6...

So i pulled the distributor cap to have a look at the points. Now i'm no expert, but the one in the first pic below seems wrong. The two contacts never seat flat against each other. Also, seems like half of the movable contact is white and corroded.

Should i replace both points and the ballasts? Can that be done with the distributor still in the motor, or should i remove it like the book says?

do them like the book or have them done for you. VERY critical in the settings do take dis out of the motor. then you can do it easier.

Thanks Dave. Well I can't find those points anywhere. Says the part is obsolete. Still up for that call?

So I ordered new condensers and 2 new sets of points. OUCH! Condesners $25/ea. One set of points NOS from ebay $55 the other from a website that says they have more than 10 in stock for $90.

Thinking of buying all their stock and sitting on it for 5 years. Then resell them for $900/each!!!

When i get the parts in I'm shipping them and the distributor to Tim and he's going to get it right for me. If it goes quick enough maybe i can take the PowerCat to the spring meet at Silver Lake on June 18th.

While at my auto mechanic i asked the owner if he knew anyone that worked on old outboards. I told him my problem with the points and he felt confident he would be able to set them correctly. He grew up working on engines with points.

I gave him a copy of the manual so he could get familiar with this specific setup. Made a synchronization plate from a downloaded picture of the plate and a piece of plywood.

He came over on Saturday. We set up new points and condensers. But were not getting continuity across the points when closed. We had to buff the points, both sets, to remove oxidization. I guess sitting on a shelf for 50 years caused some problems.

Now a question: What is the trick to bending the stationary point to get it to align? We had to remove the points, bolt them down, and use a set of needle nose to tweak one of the sets because the surfaces were not flush, but made a "V" when closed.

Well, in the video below you will see that the motor runs a helluva lot better!

Thanks everyone for all the help on this!
