Re:Awesome Glassic Videos... 8 years 11 months ago #118864

Cool - I'd like to be able to get a good look at the motor/drive that is on their boat. Looks like it revolved to a down position - can't see enough to figure out whether an actual outboard, or some kind "new fangled" thing they came up with back then!

Hello whatsleft,

I tried to get a close look at that drive and pretty sure it is the "new fangled MerCruiser" rotated up as seen in this on this 62 Glasspar Ventura.

Federalies give Peggy Sue III the once over before launching on Sea of Cortez at San Felipe.

The Ventura was retrofitted with the MerCruiser at the Glasspar factory in 1964 .

Thanks,
Terry

Re:Awesome Glassic Videos... 8 years 9 months ago #120057

Hi Shake, Thanks for the vid. It took me back some. The boats, cars, swimsuits, life jackets, yes I could have been one of the kids watching the skiers saying I'm going to do that. Looking at the boats saying I'm going to have one of those.
Guess I did not know you were from Iowa. I grew up just south of Maquoketa in Delmar.

The lake or river was our "air conditioning" back then. Puffy life jackets, steel Pontoons, boat of ALL types (homemade included), and Smokes for most of the adults. Remember it like yesterday! Those "good times" got me hooked on boating forever!!

Hi,

This is a re-post of my video from the Main Forum - I originally wanted to originally post it here, but made a mistake (not unusual for me sometimes ).

This is an engine built by Doc Frankenmerc and the video is the first time I've been able to run her at near full speed. I really wanted to showcase the sound and beauty of the Beast.

There are 4 passes in the video, two forward facing and two showing the engine.

We've only had really one warmish sunny day her in the PNW this Spring, so took advantage of it. Lake Sutherland on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State.

Re:Awesome Glassic Videos... 8 years 9 months ago #120629

Shake,
That is exactly the way I grew up on the Mississippi here in La Crosse. The boats, the life jackets, the boathouses, the way of life. The boat I first remember is the boat my dad built in 1959, about the time I was born. I had that boat until 1991, when it was diagnosed with "cancer" (wood boat) that I wasn't capable of fixing at the time. I have 2 brothers and 1 sister, and every Saturday and Sunday by 9 Am we were packing for the river. All 6 of us packed into a 15 1/2 ft boat with all of the food, refreshments ect. for the day. I don't know how my parents did it, but I would not trade the experience for a million dollars. Good or bad, it is what molded me for the rest of my life. That is one of the reasons I now have a 1959 Thompson and brought both of my sons up to enjoy what we have as a great recreational area, and to respect and preserve it for others. I think that also is one of the reasons I was a Scoutmaster and Committee Chairman for my sons' Boy Scout Troop for 15 years, to be able to pass it on. I am proud to say they are both Eagle Scouts, as am I. It is hard to explain to people that have not experienced this what it is all about. Like so many other things, it is so much more complicated now days than it was back then (God, I sound like my parents!!)
We didn't need to be entertained, we always found something to do. This boat had a million hours on it, dragging us up and down the river on skis, and just cruising.
I will use my walker to get down off my soapbox now!!
Bill
P.S. nice video Pete. Boy that extra 10 MPH over my Thompson with the 115 hp on it makes a big difference. I thought 45 felt fast!!

All Dunn II - Well Said and great boat! My grandpa hand built boats in late 30's early 40's and a 22hp Johnson to get the family out on the water and learn to ski...he even built the skis. Great activity and values to pass on! Respect for environment, help others when in need and respect others (great way to meet new friends), respect and take care of your equipment and it will serve you a long time (and family to follow).
This is why I love this sport and this site!

Nice video, nice boat with great sound of that motor. Pretty wow. it doesn't even look like it is sweating...pulling along nicely like a tractor taking it easy. And that clear water and sunshine top off what looks like a fantastic day on the water. Nice job on that rig!!

Hey All,

Our friend John Crain in NC put together this slide show and story on the restoration of his 60 Sedan.

See:
Aint she purty?

rentcomwebcast.com/JohnCraneRestoration_1.htm

Many thanks to King Oscar at Rentcom and his magic lantern lectrical stuff that makes it all possible to share.

I believe this is one of the most ambitious Sedan restorations I have seen yet. John literally replaced every stick of wood on the boat due to carpenter ant infestation.

Thanks,
Terry

Had a great time on the lake this past Sunday, shot this "walk around" video - more for the ambiance of the lake than anything else. Lake Crescent in WA state. Pete.

Thanks Terry, glad to share with all of you. It actually has been more than 5 years since I did my last video. Still enjoy going back and watching some of the older videos of mine and seeing what boats I had and enjoyed, even here on Fiberglassics. Going out on the water with these old boats is still fun for my wife and me.

Thanks Terry and a Happy New Year to you.

You should Skagit17. It's beautiful here on the Delta. For the Golden State Glassics group here in California, there's always a gathering throughout the year. We would be happy to host any glasshead who wants to visit.
