Hi guys,

I am about to get started on my next restoration project... its a cool boat that isnt in bad shape. It will replace my '59 Avalon as my Puget Sound fishing and cruising boat. I have a relatively new 50 hp Etec and some good equipment from the Avalon that will fit this baby out. The transom is solid, it apparently has fiberglass stringers. Needs mostly a fresh floor and the whole surface cleaned up (stress cracks repaired, holes filled and faired) and painted with some good two part paint. The lower plexiglass windshield is there but needs a new one formed.

All the trim is present, though the rub-rail was damaged on the stbd side to the extent that it cannot be used. Its a very narrow rub rail at 3/4" wide. I can find solid stainless rub rail, but I would like to find something close with a rubber insert. Can anyone suggest a source?

Thanks! ;)

Dean : You can try these guys they have a bunch of different options - Usually shipping kills you on this stuff ? Here's two to try. Taco metal has distributors that are close, I just ordered the metal trim for my Larson and got it through Lummi Fish In Bham so shipping was not too bad. I got 12' pieces so it was more to have it Freight shipped .

Nice looking boat - that will be a beauty when you get it done !!

Well after spending toooooooo much time searching the web for the proper rub rail insert, I gave up! I must have the new insert as I am replacing the cabin windshield, and the old, hard 48 year old stuff needs to come out to remove the screws along the shield top.

So I bit the bullet and am having them make the new die for this unique profile.

So if anyone out there has a Crestliner Explorer with this thin insert, soon they will have the proper die and you can order it by the foot.

Dean, I think that boat is the same hull as my 62 Crestliner del rio. Good to know the rubrail insert will be available. Thanks for your effort.

This rub rail was used for most of the sixtys and into the 70's on crestliners.Only it was almost impossible to find. Skip.

Yep, that hull looks the same... Nice boat Jim! They said the per foot cost of the insert will be $2.50.

If anyone knows who might have a scrap piece of the aluminum for the rub rail... I have about a 12" section that was scraped to the point its not going to hold the insert in that area. I figured I could just glue in that section of rubber for now, but I would like to replace it if I can find someone scrapping a Crestliner. Good to know Skip that it applied to so many years and models.

Can you post a close up pic of the "extrusion" Dean? Maybe a front on and a profile shot. I have some extra here you're welcome to have, not sure if it's an exact match to what you are using.....?

Dean : Have you tried Wefco for the rubber ? I have sent them a small sample in the mail and let them know how much you want and Pete will get back to you with availability. They make almost anything . If they don't have it in stock he will tell you how long till they do a run on what you want or where to look to find it . Real nice people to work with .

Hey Bellinham Rick,

Yep, thanks... Actually its Wefco who will be making the new profile for me. And Pete is the guy i am dealing with. Nice folks. I got my '59 Avalon and '59 G3 rub rail through these guys too.

I sent them the scanned photo i placed on this thread, Pete got back to me and said no joy, but he would get it setup for a tooling cost of $125. After all the frustrating hours I've spent searching, I wish that I would have just started with them. So I've mailed them an actual hunk of the insert and i should have it done in about 2-3 weeks.

I have a 1961 Explorer. Did the rub rails work out? I am going to have to replace mine.

Hi reavesga,

Yep, it worked out great, went in good too. Is yours the same profile?

Yes mine is the same profile. I am ripping it out right now. Do you have a source for the metal retaining track. Mine is beat up bad on the port side stern for some reason. It looks like a snake going down the side of the boat.

Also, my transom corners are gone. Wondering if you can take detailed pictures and measurements of yours so that I can make some replacement ones. Also a picture of what it is supposed to look like in the transom area / outboard well area.

Do you have the profile number. I also need about 8 ft of the aluminum extrusion. Looks like she hit a dock or something and bent the rail on the port side stern. Need to replace about 4 to 6 ft of track.

Hi Reavesga,

I don't have a profile number, the made the die for me. You could contact Pete at Wefco, and tell him you need the profile they custom made for Dean Lofall:

Contact: Pete Stigers

If you find a source on the rub rail aluminum, I need about 3 feet myself... mine was scraped on the starboard side.
