Welcome Sebastion, glad to have you join us. Congrats on the "new" boat, and good for you for digging right into the restoration/renovation! I checked out your other pics, looks like you had quite a soggy mess on your hands there.

You can post multiple pics by posting with one, then hit the "edit" button and post another. This can be repeated as many times as you would like. Hope you keep us posted on your progress, and I feel sure someone will be able to help identify your boat soon. ;)

Sebastian, good find. Welcome to the community. All the information you could possibly want is right here at your fingertips. The pictures tell a lot. I like the setup on your trailer for protecting the motor lower unit.

Thank you all for the warm welcome :)
I tried to take some pictures from the bow of my boat. It is a little difficult, because it's dark outside when I go to work in the morning and dark again when I come back home. :(
But I think the pictures might help to identify my boat.

So if you have any idea, please don't hesitate to tell me

Have a nice day, Sebastian

Yes, there is a lot of work to do on this boat. But I like it, it's a nice project for wintertime.
And I'm very happy to have my garage for that renovation.
I wonder, if I will ever have my car in there. ;)
For the last five years, when we did the renovation of our house, the garage was used as storage room for all our construction material and tools. In the autumn this year, I cleared up the garage to have my car in there in wintertime, but than this boat appeared :P
So there will be another winter of ice-scraping on the front window of my car. I'm glad, that my wife is so patient with me

This weekend I will try to start rebuilding the transom, if there is a little time between baking christmas-cookies, having friends around for a little BBQ and all the other things my family wants to do on weekend. If I can manage it, I will surely post some pictures here.

At the moment, we are discussing what color fits best to the boat. My four year old son wants it red, like a firefighter-boat. To be honest, I'm not sure... ;)
What color would be typical for the 60's or 70's? Light blue? Light green, like mint? Or simply white?
Exactly for this question it would be great to know which boat I have, so that I can find a color that is "historically correct".

Anyway, I'm sure, you and I will solve this riddle

Have a nice day!

Having an understanding spouse certainly makes a world of difference, I often volunteer to scrape her windows and start the car to warm up to help smooth things over. (There seems to always be one boat project or another in the garage during the winter months!)

While we're waiting on boat ID info, you may like to look through the gallery to get ideas on colors....
www.fiberglassics.com/gallery.html
Some beautiful projects done by other members here, some are very creative and some follow original guidelines faithfully.

Finding time and resources ($) to keep the project going during the holidays is a problem many of us have to deal with, I'm currently operating in "stealth mode" myself! B)

Just curious why you decided to cut the outer skin of the boat? This will be bit of a structural engineering situation when it's time to rebuild the transom. Typically you would remove the top cap of the boat or cut the gunwales in front of the splashwell to get to the transom and leave the outer skin intact. Not saying it can't and hasn't been done this way before, just makes it harder to ensure the structural integrity of the boat has not been compromised. The hull is now not a one piece molded constructed piece. Layering and blending the glass on the outside will take some effort.

The only number on the boat is stamped into the gelcoat on the port side of the transom:

"PA / 35".

I have no idea what this could mean

Hi Flamingo :)

I know, that it is not the perfect way to rebuilt the transom, but the transom was repaired by somebody before, who did a really bad job
So this was the only way and I will have to rebuild the transom completely.

Wish me luck

Looks like a fun project :)

And, Don't apologize for your english- It's quite good- viel besser als mein Deutscher ist.

That transom repair won't be too bad- It looks like a flat one, so rebuilding the outer skin won't be too tough at all.

As for color- You can go as wild as you want- Though there were some more 'common' colors in that era. Blue, Mint greens, and yellow/oranges seem to have been popular at the time. But- Do it how YOU want it...

I'm looking forward to seeing this progress.

Morning Sebastian,

Don't sweat the lack of proper English here. Most of us were born and raised int he States and still don't know or use it. Welcome to the site.

From reading your posts, I see that boating all around the world requires the same things - a garage for winter work and a very understanding wife.

The guys here on this site are geniuses and seem to know a lot about buidling, fixing and generally keeping our boats afloat.

I really like your boat, too. Great find!

Hi Sebastian,
Here is some catalog information on your boat. The first is from the 1969 catalog. Notice that the length is gunwale length. The centerline length is 13'9". The next two scans are from the 1970 and 1971 catalogs. I hope that this information will help.

Hey Lee and all you other fabulous guys

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

This is all I can say! I'm really happy! Now my boat has a history and a name! There is a "Winner Piranha 2" in my garage!
Now it is not an "unknown" boat anymore! Thanks to all of you again!

It is a great experience that there are experts on the "other side of the world", that care for my problems and are taking their time to answer all my questions!
I surely will post my restoration here in this forum and I'm sure that there will be more than one question that I will ask... ;)

Now the weekend is nearly over and there was no time to work on the boat, but I hope I will have some time during next week and next weekend. I'll keep you informed :)

Have a nice day!!!

The first layer of wood and fiberglass are placed. The new transom is "growing"
Tomorrow I will built in the next layer. Finally there will be four layers of wood and fiberglass.
I worked with fiberglass and epoxy for the first time and I must say, I'm very pleased with my work! ;)

Have a nice day!

The basic construction of the transom is finished, four layers of wood and fiberglass are now in the boat. There will be a wooden strip on top of the transom to have a perfect edge....

Help, my english is not good enough to explain want I want to say, I'll better show you pictures... :silly:

Tomorrow I will finish the last layers of fiberglass on the inside and outside of the transom.
I'll will keep you informed B) Have a nice day!

The evening is gone and it was quite successful!
The transom is covered with three more layers of fiberglass, I think there have to be two layers more, to have a plane transom again.
But I will not conceal that I have totally miscalculated with my amount of resin.
3 pounds resin are gone and I must buy more resin tomorrow

Unfortunately no pictures today, my wife has a christmas staff party in here company and left home with our camera :(
So I will show you some pictures later...

Have a nice day!

I can totally relate to that! I think I'm on my 7th or 8th gallon on my project, and not done yet! (I anticipated using 3 or 4.) There is no teacher like experience, we learn as we go. :P

Now here are two new pictures :)

At the moment I have to wait for new resin. I hope it will arrive before Christmas, so I can continue my restoration after the Christmas holidays.
By the way, it's always good to have an educated wife...
She told me, that kilogram and pound are not the same
I wrote, that I used 3 pounds resin, but it was 3 kilogram, so nearly 6.6 pounds!

So I learned something new again :P

Have a nice day and happy Christmas holidays!!!

I'm back again
And I was not lazy during the last month...
The transom is now ready, soft and clean like the skin of a new born baby :)
It was a lot of work, and right now I really don't want to use my sander anymore.

How here are some brand new pictures!

The last week we had temperatures around 11ºF!!! And the forecast for the next two weeks is the same
So working on the boat is nearly impossible :(
But I do my very best! I took the boat from the trailer and flipped it. Right now the complete hull is sanded and tomorrow I will flip it again and start preparing the new floor.
I will post some new pictures this weekend.
I hope the temperatures will rise soon, so I can start laminating the floor.
Of course I could heat my garage, but at the moment the temperatures are far to low, the heating will be too expensive to reach a proper temperature for laminating.
So I have to wait...

Have a nice day!

Baby it's cold outside :P
But it was a beautiful winter-day with my son! We prepared most of the plywood for the floor and some other parts, e.g. a little box for the switch panel.
And our seats arrived. I found them in the netherlands and I like the colors very much.
Oh, I forgot to tell you, that the boat will be "firefighter-red", so my little son won his battle ;)

Now here are todays pictures!

Have a nice day! Sebastian

Now another weekend is over and I think, I did quite well!
Saturday night was my night
My wife was tired and went to bed very early and I decided to be a good husband and not going to disturb her by snoring next to her... ;)
So I went into my garage! It was a long and successful night, now my winner has a new floor and all the lamination work is done.
The bilge was painted twice before I laminated the new floor over it. The new floor has four water-save hatches, so if there will be water or moisture in the bilge, it will be no problem to remove it.

Next step is sanding the laminated floor, before painting it with anti-slip-deckspaint.

I'll keep you informed :)

Have a nice day, Sebastian

Sorry boys for being so slow :(
But there are a lot of other things to do at the moment, so the progress on the boat is not as fast as it could be.
Status quo:
The complete inside of the boat is laminated and painted twice with gray bilge-paint.
No pictures from this part, because I was too fast flipping the boat, I forgot to take pictures from the inside, sorry!
Then the hull was finally filled and sanded.
At the moment the hull is painted the first time with a 2 component paint (Polyurethan).
Today I will apply the second layer.

To be continued...

Hi Dean,

I use a roller (I don't know, if this is the correct word, but I'm sure, you know what I mean ;) ) to apply the paint and a brush to make a perfect finish without bubbles. It works very well.
Your right, the color looks a little bit orange on the picture, but like my four-year-old son would say, it is "firefighter-car-red"
Today I applied the last layer paint on the hull, I will take some pictures later.

Have a nice day!

It looks excellent so far Sebastian, great job! I'm going to be attempting the "roll and tip" method on mine soon as well. Did you have someone helping, or do it yourself? (Roll a section then come back and tip it with the brush?)

Hi Mark,

I see, it's called "roll and tip method" in english :)

With my paint this method works perfectly! I did the painting alone. As you guessed, I rolled a section and then tipped it softly with the brush.
But I think, very important for a good result is the temperature. At the moment we have temperatures here in Germany that are on the lower edge of the working-temperature of my paint. That means, that the reaction of the two components is quite slow and I have enough time for both working-steps (rolling and tipping).
I guess in the summertime with high temperatures, you need help by a another person, tipping right beside you.

Phew, I hope you understood everything. But this forum is always a good english-lesson for me ;)

Re:Is this a "Winner"? 12 years 9 months ago #57919

Sebastian, real nice job! :)

I too am going to do my next boat using the roll and tip method. My last boat (G3) was sprayed, and I spent WAY TOO MUCH money on the paint job (US$ 2300). I also ended up having to go back and wet sand it anyway... it wasnt smooth enough for my taste. I am now starting the restoration of a 1964 Crestliner Explorer which should be ready for paint sometime this summer.

what type/brand of paint did you use? And would you offer any tips after your experience?

Thanks, Dean
