TOPIC: Has anyone ever "raised" a transom?

Don't know how stable it needs to be but it seems to be tough as nails right now. I couldn't find any lighter stuff at the local store so I bought a 4' pre cut piece of schedule 40 for $2.47 and try to do the whole length. Maybe just shape it on the transom? Even if it doesn't paint up there's nothing wrong with a white cap in my book. This is just messin''round trying other things. If it works - fine, if not it's just a few hours, a lot of education and not a whole bunch of money.

it should air again Wednesday.. they still havent finished the glasstron they atarted i think he got tired of it and scraped it ... this program was actually educational for a change instead of trying sell me something. ok off now to sand down the deck, a bird pooped on it and left a stain, after trying to clean it i have to sand the whole cap again.

Sorry, I missed your reply a few days ago, and I should have been more clear.

Typical Sch40 pvc yellows (then turns brown) in the sun and becomes fairly brittle. I don't know how long it takes, but I'd hazard to guess that a majority of the days you boat are bright and sunny days. It would be worse if the boat is moored uncovered much, but I don't know your exact situation...

It was just fyi in case you didn't know, and if you planned to paint it, it wouldn't matter since paint would cover it for UV protection.

If you want to experiment w/ another pipe, I'd suggest the gray pvc conduit they sell for electrical applications. It should behave similarly when cut and heated, and IS UV stable.

Passed on past projects, I'm sure whatever you decide will look great, and if you leave the white pvc unpainted, like you said, it wasn't expensive..

JB, you're right. It does turn brown, sorta coffee/cream color. I found this out by using my palm sander on the edges during shaping. The boat is just a small 13 1/3 footer that will spend 90% of it's time on a trailer under cover. Now you have me thinking about painting it. Since the top cap of the boat will be painted with Rusto marine with hardener I can shoot the PVC no problem. Any info on painting PVC? I suppose googling that would come up with some answer.
Sanding with 120 grit to put some tooth on it would help, maybe wiping it with some voc bad stuff would also help, acetone, naphtha, liquor thinner to prep it etc.

I thing you'd do better to use a Krylon plastic spray can.

Since it's all trial & error, and low cost materials, if you can mix a small batch of Rusto w/ hardener, spray a slightly scuffed piece of PVC w/ it and the Krylon and let them both sit for a while. See which paint holds up better, once it's well cured. Rusto could take 30days or more to reach maximum cure when used w/out the hardener. W/ I don't know, since it dries faster, maybe it'll cure faster too.

Same for solvent wipe down, probably oughta test them on scrap pvc. I think the pvc may react or get gummy when whipped w/ some of those solvents you mentioned.

Thanks for posting this.I was all excited about using my other engine and did not realize the difference.Using this makes it a temporary change that allows me to go back to stock someday.

Like the way those control cables and steering are mounted. I never thought of anything like that

100hp he built it strong it was a little heavy,,just a center deck G-3 finally got 50 mph but really played with props to get it,,but total custom,,it was nice Bill

Looks good, was that just and add-on piece then the metal plate or was the whole transom replaced?

Finally hung the motor on the new raised transom Friday.

Saturday was hooking up steering cables, about 2,000 tries before finally getting it right. Higher angle on the cables but nothing is binding.

Sunday I finished the steering setup. A one off of old parts I had laying around.

Time to finally put this project in the books and set up on Craigslist. Got the graphics from Fastsigns, $26.

To add... I did top off the new transom with the PVC and it turned out great.

Looks great. I hope someday my Evinrude will look that good. The transom looks factory.
