1955 Johnson 25 HP models:
Model RD-17 (short shaft)
Model RDL-17 (long shaft)
Model RDE-17 (short shaft, electric start)
Model RDEL-17 (long shaft, electric start)
The 1955 Johnson Sea Horse 25 HP motors were yet another step in the continual improvement of the OMC Big Twin outboard motor series. Over the years, this series underwent improvements in throttle linkages, carburetors, and compression which eventually led to a peak horsepower rating of 35 HP, achieved in 1957. The basic motor survived well into the 1960's as the Evinrude/Johnson 33 HP model. For 1955, the Johnson "RDE" model featured standard electric start. The "RD" model was available in pull-start only but could be later upgraded with an electric-start accessory kit. Both models were available in short- or long-shaft models and could accept remote throttle controls.
