TOPIC: Yellow Jackets

Yellow Jackets 1 year 7 months ago #143849

For all the Vintage Boating People, I met one of the creators of the Yellow Jacket Boat Factory, Richard “Mac” McDerby, at the building of the Higgins Landing Craft (LCVP) Project for the D-Day Museum (Now called the WWII Museum) He was Andrew Jackson Higgins’s (Creator of the LCVP) personal Yacht Captain, mastered the LCVP and designed and ran the training program for the crews of the LCVP during WWII on Lake Pontchatrain in New Orleans Louisiana. Including Marvin Perret, a 19 year old Coxswain of the LCVP during the war. Graham Haddock, the man who designed the LCVP was also at the Project. There is a story that no one could figure out a way to lower and raise the steel gate on the front of the LCVP and Andrew Jackson Higgins being impatient as he was wanted to know what was going on. So someone said Graham was working on something. So Graham pulled out a Cigar Box that he had rigged with toy pulleys and string and that is how the lowering and raising mechanism was produced. The LCVP, the plywood boat that won the War. Many stories. Remember those men well. Good Men.

If you just Google “Yellow Jacket Boats” there are some good histories that come up including the first one.
