Boats made after November 1, 1972 are required to have a hull identification number (HIN). The HIN gives information on the manufacturer, month and year of manufacture, and a unique hull serial number. The HIN is regulated by the US Coast Guard and should not be confused with state watercraft registration numbers which are assigned by state agencies.
