I have a problem that has stumped the folks on the motor forums.

I have a 1968 Merc 1250 125hp inline 6. While changing the water pump, I noticed it didn't have an exhaust tube. I saw it on the parts diagram but it's not in my motor. Members of another forum said I do have an exhaust tube and showed me the diagram for it. Seemed logical so I began my effort to restore the exhaust tube.

So, I purchased a used one and all the gaskets off ebay. When I pulled the exhaust extension plate, I noticed it did not look like the one in the diagram. It did not have an extension for the exhaust tube to slide over. So I went to the boat parts website to look it up and it shows two different part numbers for my motor. The one I have (48712) and the one that's pictured (52932). That leads me to believe that my motor came with and without an exhaust tube. Is this correct? The 52932 cross references to many motors, but mine (48712) is only for the 1250.

The new plastic water tube guide is all bubbled and melted from just one test day.

Everything is apart and I'm stumped as to what to do. Should I just put it back together? Or should I get the extension plate for the tube? Another factor is that there are also two different drive shaft housings for my motor, a 3669 and a 3918. I'm thinking that maybe that changes too?

I really need some help on this. The powerhead is currently hanging off the back of my truck on a borrowed hoist :-O

Thanks,
Mark

I think alot of what makes people gun shy on these old boats, is the fear of glass work. I have had people bring me jobs to repair that any kid with a disc sander could handle, just because it was fiberglass. And part two is the old floating hole to throw money in thing......I think I am sitting at about 600.00 total in my 56 glasspar delmar (so far I have recarpeted the interior and rewired from bow to stern, and replaced the WP impeller) So I know the economy is bad these days, but 600.00 for a running floating boat with a nice little cabin is not a bad deal, especially since how I don't have to drag the tent and all that jazz to the lake with me anymore(and no waking up cuddling a snake in my sleeping bag)

Hey, Bill. I got Myles motor today and pulled the plugs. I did the compression check. All about 90/150-160. Plugs were kinda wet. I'm gonna wait for Myles' o.k. to post the photos. I'm gonna drop the lower unit then check the impeller, which I'm sure is fried. Thanks again for the referral. He wants to beef up the h.p. by putting on high performance parts. I said I'll check with you and see what you got.

Hold the phone..... That engine is a 40 Electromatic, not a 60. Your engine only has 2 cylinders and the 60 have 4. So this is a different story completely. Yest the lower unit is a jet stream, but it's a little different than the larger V-4 60 to 90 horse engines. You need to find a prop for any Johnson 40 HP with PIN DRIVE.. Propco.com has them and they are plentiful on Ebay. I would guess at a 10X12 or 10-3/8X12 would work on your boat.

Sorry, you choose to not celebrate Skip's G-3 effort and what I was trying to do here, which was to have fun in G-3s. No more, no less.

To answer your question, not as many as you directed all of us to look. It showed alot of great boats, plus a bevy of G-3 boats in the water and what looked like a great event in 2009.

This past weekend in St. Michaels, MD, over a three day Classic Boat Show that just closed on Father's Day, we did not have a single G-3 in the water, giving rides.

I just want to keep the hobby going in 2013, 2014, 2015. I want to build on the lore of G-3 boats. I want to add value to my hobby and boats.

Well, sometimes you need to just walk away and get refreshed. after a trip back to the cabin, a cold one and a smoke on my vintage pipe, it was under the dash for my first look see. Low and behold, there it was, a disconnected wire from the vibration of the trailer trip. A new connector, and varoom! Wake Speed!

Thanks to all for yor ideas!

Hi Ron,
No it isn't my job. I was just surfing the web on "fiberglass repair" and found this link. I've read the research section here, which is very informative and well done, by the way.
And have seen the process between the research and this clip, is dead on.
But is was nice to see, and hear the actual task performed, and the quick: why I did or didn't do it one way or the other ? And the technique, used while applying the glass.
So I figured if anyone out there has not seen this youtube clip, it was worth sharing. His whole series of videos look real good too.
I know there will be a lot of learning, and finesse to working glass, but I think Andy (narrator)kept me from making some of the rookie mistakes, I would have made.

Don't buy the 16 ounce can unless you do lots of work, a little goes a long way & 4 ounces will last the average garage guy years.

I thought the BRP reccomended goop for older lower units was part number 776964, which should get you a tube of 3M Scotchgrip #847. If your 25hp is the 22ci "sportster" (souped up fastwin) this may apply. I'm sure someone on the AOMCI "as-a-member" forum can say for sure.

I seem to recall hearing that gel seal IS used on some more modern vintage lower units.

The first 15Hp and 9.9 Hp were the same blocks, however the 15 hp had a larger Ex tube, a spacer for the reed plate, and the carb was diff.

Later they started to use the same ex tube on the 9.9 that was used on the 15 hp, so the spacer and the carb is the only diff.

I have change many 9.9 hp to a 12 hp to 14 hp by just changing the carb. (testing them beside my true 15 hp they run a bit slower same boat same load) and not installing the spacer on the reed plate

Being that the carb ports and venture are larger on the 15 hp they just will not idle as slow as the 9.9 hp does. Some what like when one hot rods a car.

As for fuel. If I run the 14 foot john at 15 MPH. On the 9.9 hp I use about the same fuel as I do running running the 15 hp at the same speed, however I can get on top faster with the 15 hp and still have more speed then I do on the 9.9 hp.

I think it is something like 1/2 open on the 15 hp and near 7/8 open on the 9.9 hp (at 15 MPH using the GPS)....I will need to check that out next time I am playing with them.

Subject: Are Evinrude 9.9 & 15hp junk? - by: ed_mc

If I recall, the early models of the 9.9/15hp had a problem with the cylinder head design, and OMC came out with an improved head to be retrofitted to those motors.

I'd say anything in an 80's-and-up vintage is a pretty decent motor. When they're run a lot in salt, they have issues with the rubber upper water tube grommet squeezing shut, then you lose cooling. The 6, 7.5, and 8hp models (starting in the 80's) have the same problem.

To fix you have to pull the powerhead, remove the exhaust tuner plate bolted to the bottom of the powerhead, and replace the grommet. After scraping out all the salt build-up which caused the trouble in the first place!

My solution to that problem is to assemble the grommet and water tube back into the tuner, with a good coating of Permatex No. 3 Aviation-type gasket dressing. This prevents future salt buildup. Use Permatex on all the tuner bolts, too, when they seize in the powerhead it's a real pain to get them out!

I never did like the 9.9/15's funky idle speed adjuster, that and all the plastic gears etc can be a pain to work on. And the recoil starter assy can be real a bugger if you don't put it back together the right way!

But, you get one that's in decent shape, all the systems working as they should, and they're a great running motor.

I had the pleasure of working on a very low-time '83 9.9 over at Doc Frankenmercs last month, it couldn't have had more than a tank or so of gas ran thru it. Everything under the powerhead looked absolutely brand new. The only thing wrong was it wasn't getting fuel into the carb.

Pulled the carb apart and the pivot pin for the float had expanded (probably from some exposure to ethanol) slightly and the float was stuck on the pin and wouldn't pivot to let fuel in.

And it's possible the metal pivot piece on the float was crimped too tight from the factory. All I had to do was adjust the crimp on the float so it had plenty of clearance on the pin, and back together she went.

Ran like a new motor, now I know how a new one of these is supposed to sound like, cause that one was quieter than any I've ever worked on! It idled down so slow you could count the firing pulses.

The guy got a fantastic deal on a boat & trailer package with this motor, I told the Doc that the motor was worth far more than what he paid for everything!

Lots of these out there, in various states of repair/disrepair. Find one that hasn't been thrased/abused, do the maintenance on it and it'll give you good service.

Cheers...........ed

I fell into a trap last month. I found (and bought)on Craigslist the same model boat my dad bought new in 1969 when I was nine, an Evinrude Explorer in really nice shape. My problem is that I want to have a convertible top made just like the original. I have the framework so I need to know what kind of material I should pick to have it made from. I've found some pictures to help the shop see what it should look like but I need a good picture of the front zippered "sunroof" area near the hinged windshield. Any help would be appreciated.

Sadly, I have to find a new home for my '61 Bristol that is in this years calendar. Not finding any takers at a price I think is fair just for the motor.

Del VanEmmerik at herters59@hotmail.com has what you need for tail lights and decals. I used Coker tires on my Herters. They are pricey and after a few years they started to look gray and didn't clean up as well I felt they should. I also have Coker wide whites on my car and have not had a problem keeping them clean even after eight years. I do use the cleaner that Coker sells. http://www.fiberglassics.com/images/fbfiles/images/Alexandria_photo.JPG

The seat shells and console are fiberglass moldings that had a pebble grain type texture on the outer surfaces. Each of these pieces needed some work to repair stress cracks and chips from usage.

The texture would have been very difficult and time consuming to try to duplicate so it was decided to make all the outer surfaces smooth and then paint them white as original. The smooth surface would match the other white painted surfaces on the hull and would be easier to keep clean.

Hi all,

I realized I hadn't updated this in a while.

I received my finished seats a couple weeks ago, and they look absolutely stunning! I can't wait to see what they look like in the finished boat. They match the original pattern exactly and far exceeded my expectations! I think I do have them arranged wrong here though.

With the cart done to hold the boat when flipped over, I was ready:

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/46642_4779907944072_1133788988_n.jpg

First step was to design the mechanism to lift it and tilt it. The chain lifts simply hook to 4x4s spanned across the rafters. It lifted the boat slow and steady, which worked well. Lifted it up off the trailer, pulled trailer out, kept lifting, rotated it onto cart, then let it down.

And that's where it sits now. I finally got the lower unit seals and water pump replaced on the pontoon so I could get it in the water. Now I can get back to the Cutter again.

Wefco did mine, and did a beautiful job. I haven't installed it yet though since the boat isn't done. My boat has a fiberglass lip sticking out that the rub rail had to go over, so it was quite different than the rest. I designed my own rubrail design to accommodate a stainless steel strip insert and Wefco came through better than expected.

My wife thinks it was a Trojan, but it foesn't look like any Trojan I can find. It was a fun first skiboat! http://www.fiberglassics.com/images/fbfiles/images/photo_1-20130613.JPG

The Waseca County Fair is looking for a wonderful Herter's boat like yours to be on display at the Waseca County Fair, July 17-21st. We have our own building on the fairgrounds. I am having trouble locating one.
I don't know where you are located, would you be interested? Any tips on tracking one down would be very much appreciated.

Thanks Jon, I ran the 1/8" plastic tubing through 1/4" rubber hose to protect it, acts like a sleeve I guess. (Maybe overkill?)
why did you chose to install it so low? That's where the factory put a boss for the tell-tale on this motor, I just T'd it off to run a gauge as well.

I just like being able to glance down at the dash (the gauge) and make sure everything is working as it should be.

I've seen 'em get so hot from dry-running that the pump housing melts, then a ton of molten plastic drips down the center into the pump and hardens. It'll form perfectly around the driveshaft, just like it had been poured that way at the factory.

Then, the next time the motor is started, the hardened plastic chews the heck out of the impeller. Once the plastic melts that badly, the housing is shot and the insert gets welded in there anyway.

In that case the impeller will usually show severe heat damage, even burnt rubber.

Long time ago I had a Sierra impeller fail in an Evinrude 40hp, fried the motor.

I contacted Sierra and they not only replaced the impeller, they paid parts & labor for me to rebuild the powerhead. That was back in the 80's, their warranty policies may have changed since then. They supposedly corrected their impeller mfg issues and I've used plenty of Sierra impeller since then with no failures.

Last thought, wonder if the ethanol-laced fuels have anything to do with delamination of the metal-to-rubber bond. We know how well ethanol dissolves rubber hoses and seals!

Cheers......ed

Man said the video sold it. It was on Craiglist for a half hour. This was the original color I believe on the powerhead. Maybe early 70's.
Welcome to Fiberglassics! The carb & fuel line maint is a good start; you can get what they call a "packing kit" which has all the little gaskets etc you'll need for an "R&R" of the carbs.

I'd also recommend replacing the carb floats; the old-style floats can deteriorate from ethanol-containing fuels. The new-design floats are much better in that respect.

Also plan on replacing the water pump impeller with a new factory item. Cheap insurance for the Ol' Gal!

We'll be anxious to see any pics you may have of your rig, and be sure to post any updates on your progress.

The Lake Chatuge Meet was this weekend, then there's the Charlotte Antique & Classic Boat Show Thursday, Sep 5-8. The Boating Bonanza for Children Saturday, Sep 28. (Not sure on the location, the website doesn't give much detail unfortunately.) I believe that rounds out their 5 event season, but Jan (Nautilus) can probably advise or confirm better than I.

Fresh Boarder, that is one sweet looking boat. I have a Performer Vagabond Deluxe that I am working on. I've run into the same situation with the stringers, not a very good job and I can do a better job of laying them in and glassing over them correctly. I've had mine since August of 2012 and finally have the weather to begin the teardown and restoration. FiberGlassics is the only site that I have been able to find any information on this company, I feel lucky to have stumbled upon them while doing research on the boat. Keep the pictures coming, I'll be out grinding today, wish I was as far into the teardown as you are.

If you'll recall, there's a plastic spacer spool in there that transmits the motion of the brass shift cams to the lockout rod yoke.

I'd think that you could cut that spool in half then make a 5" spacer tube, this would retain the original function of the spool. Might be a bit awkward to assemble, but I imagine you could just put a few wraps of electrical tape on the pieces so they're all tied together, or assemble it with shrink sleeving so it's a cleaner-looking assembly.

It's a 59 model and for sure not a very common one. For the few extra $ it cost to move up to the Starflite very few of these were sold, It would be extra cool if it was the tiller model, I've only seen those in advertisements. Considering the rarity the price isn't bad either.

I ordered 12 gallons 2 5 gallon and 1 2 gallon buckets
seacast has a chart for ordering . you measure your transom with or without the cutouts a little math times how thick your opening is and then you buy 5 gallons 2 gallons or one gallon buckets. it comes with micro fibers from recycled boats and the hardener, and instructions ...... alot of people have made videos using it so you ca pull from alot of different places

again i'm taping the process so i can give seacast a testimonial

15 PSI Teleflex gauge. The pickup is a separate fitting on the top of both motors.

I confirmed the gauge is accurate, as I have a small hand pump. I set it to 5 PSI and thats what the gauge reports.

The old Merc manual states that water pressure should never go below 5PSI. I guess if both run cool, the water pressure is irrelevant. I just use the gauge to monitor possible pump failure. So watching the needle move to 3PSI is all I need.

The is no leaking water from gaskets anywhere on either motor, as I replaced most of them. It's a mystery as why two different Merc's have so low of pressure.

Wish I could help you Bud, but I'm a Duracraft guy. You might try just searching this site by typing in Lonestar and maybe there will be some pictures to help you, or hopefully it will lead you directly to a Lonestar owner that can tell you where the numbers are on his/hers.

I totally agree about the Clear Coat. The hardener has Gloss enhancers in it and all my projects have come out with a High Gloss and extremely Hard Durable finish that did not require a Clear coat. Besides, not if but when you get that ding or scratch, having several coats of clear on your paint job makes it that much more difficult to effect the repair. Just my 2¢ worth

1. Did you use an epoxy paint, or gelcoat? Do you have color codes that you used?

A polyurethane paint was used and color matched to the hidden fiberglass seat back of the deck. Unfortunately, I do not have the brand of polyurethane or color codes; however Goose (Ron) over at the old ski doo boards should be able to direct you if you need specific color codes:

kkosche wrote: 2. Do you have the model of gas tank you used? I would think external venting would be critical. I have thought about installing a small PWC type of tank with the necessary venting pick ups. . . space appears to be limited.

I utilized a 3 gallon Attwood gas tank.

Unfortunately I do not have wiring diagrams for the 1969 Sea Doo.

What made you decide to go through your entire motor? I like the original look of my motor as is . . .and would like to avoid those costs if possible. My muffler has already been redone in stainless. Any guidance here would be appreciated.

The Rotax engine in the 1968 Sea Doo was a time tested engine utilized in the Ski Doo snowmobiles of the time. The crankcase seals along with compression test operated within limits. The carburetor was cleaned and rebuilt with a Winderosa kit that is still available.

The stainless muffler far exceeds the muffler of 1968. Two shot 1968 mufflers were sacrificed to determine the factory construction, and then custom built. There was no other choice.

Any wood preservative with proper curing should be fine since it was all eventually covered over in epoxy.

The muffin fan is 12 volt wired hot into the battery with a hidden toggle switch under the raised seat. Wired hot so as it vents the engine compartment of gas vapors while eventually inserting key. ALWAYS lift the seat for a proper amount of time to aid in further alleviation of gasoline fumes. Probably overkill, however “safety first”.

I confess that I have never been a fan of traditional marine waxes. This probably comes from my sailing and racing background and the fact that wax actually increases drag over untreated gelcoat. Plus you can get a build up that may need to be removed periodically. I have used the polimer polishes for quite a while. Currently I use West Marine Pure Oceans Wash-n-Shine. So far I have been happy with the results. The caveat is that my boats are not left in the water all season and this is only on gelcoat. My CC lives in the garage when not in use, but my Laser (14' sailboat) is outside in a storage rack. Both finishes seem to hold up well.

Non-running, no starter= hard to get a compression check, no controls, I wouldn't go over $100. I am thinking of dragging out my 1962 bell boy ballerina project this summer and replacing the transom....I remember reading somewhere that these were seamless boats, is this true( I would look my self but My boat is stored out at the folks ranch...lol) if it is splitting it is not an issue for me, glass work is cake for me. I am just trying to decide which way to go on summer projects....it's either paint my '56 delmar or split the bell boy and transom that sucker....(probably should just paint the Delmar....but hey it is usable as of now)

I have been thinking about converting my Seafair sedan to an I/O also. (Hell...I thought it was an original idea...Didn't know Glasspar actually made them!) Anyway, I have pretty much settled on using a 225 V6 (Buick based) with a stringer outdrive. The idea is to hide the engine (in a retro style enclosure) and have the stringer hanging out the back looking very vintage. I know it will be heavier in the rear but probably not more than 200 lbs which means I invite one less fat chick aboard...no problem!

http://forums.fiberglassics.com/g3/
http://archives.fiberglassics.com/g3/glassparg3.html

I'm still confused though :-)

Would be nice if there was a page on a site with chart with columns listing all our names and g3's with like info to compare with factory hull numbers, where they were located on boat plus more but for now all this info is scattered about. I think if profile was set up right it could happen, would need a pewter geek to figure that out....

example: name, g3 year, color, HIN & location found, port or starboard steering, floor foam plug?, foot rest (speed bump) or not, sponson decal or not, center deck support glasspar emblem or not, 2 or 3 piece bow trim, like that? etc. (if someone has nothing to do,lol) Same for open decks which I know near nothing about as my 3 are Center Decks.

That is a one classy 15', like a woman in her perfect little black dress.

I thought about going with the mahogany interior. After pricing the wood WOW and knowing the abuse it would get, I think not. The cost of just the wood would buy a very nice electric motor for the bow. Fishing these tight canals it will get much more use than the outboard. I'm sticking with plastic, the Katama's did not come with any mahogany. I do have enough plastic sheet on hand to do an interior like the Sakonnet's.

Well I know where my great grandfather's powered skiff is. The bottom of New Haven (CT) harbor. One of the guys that worked for him (he ran the power house for the trolley company) said he would put an engine in it for him. He installed a car engine and transmission connected to the propeller shaft and the steering was a tiller and rudder. As the story goes, he (the workman, not my great grandfather) took off in 1st gear and was cruising along fine when he shifted into 2nd gear. He was flying along in 2nd and decided to shift into 3rd. At this point it became overpowered and the boat nose dived and sank. The workman swam ashore, took the trolley home and didn't tell me great grandfather until the next day.

Yes welcome aboard Kevin. I'm with Mark and Skipp, keep her as she is, great story and it would cost a good chuck to get her back to original, plus not as cool of a story then. Make sure the engine stringers are solid and no sign of rot or that motor could give you problems as Skipp said.

This is real cool. Our family has a similar Larson (not double cockpit) at Priest Lake. I'm going to check it out on
Thurs. after I've been fishing for the next three days. I have no experience with stripping and polishing a lummi. Would I be getting in over my head?? The motor sounds pretty solid.

hi, i have a 40hp ser# 4365352 that has spark on only one cylinder. so far the only thing i did was swap the green coil wires coming from the switchbox and i got spark on the other cylinder so i know the coils are ok. My question is this, i have a switchbox #339 7452 from a 25hp from the same time period, can that be used on the 40hp. The 40hp switchbox is #332-4911. Looking at the wiring diagrams the ignition systems seem similar although the color coding is different.

I sealed the previous mount bolt holes with RTV silicone. If I were going to leave this motor on, I should probably drill new holes for mount bolts. Is it OK to drill MORE holes, in the transom? And is it Ok to test run with just the clamp mounts tightened in place? Thanks for any input...

Shello,

The Botved is still classed as a wood boat. Mine was a 1960 19.8' Cornet Cabin boat. I do miss that boat very much the Danes are good at boat building. This site has an excellent forum for wood boats. Another source is the ACBS. I would try the forum here at Fiberglassics first for immediate practical assistance, and the ACBS for their archive on wooden boats.

The range of props on these is not overly wide - if you intend to run them fast. We use a big bladed 9/10 for slow river runs (speed/wash limits)and at the moment it's running a 13pitch. The boat is 160lbs without motor, about 650lbs all loaded, so will be fine.

Look at the Glassic Library here in the AeroCraft section at the various brochures to help ID the boat.

To post pictrues you need to first upload them to something like Photobucket than cut and paste them into your posting.

Well, I guess the old adage, "popular then = popular now" is really true, and like wise, "un-popular then = un-popular now". The poor old Four Fifty . . . lost and forgotten, bypassed by time. The Rodney Dangerfield of Evinrude motors. "No Respect".

I asked my father if he would take me ice skating. He said, "why don't we wait till it gets warmer?!"

Thanks for all the encouragement. I did re-wire internal wire harness. and poof! The engine now runs. It's not pumping H2o, but thats a differet issue.
Lesson learned: Don't just replace switchboxes, rectifierers, coils etc. w/o examinging the whole wire harness for conceled damage, corrosion. It's time consumming But at least you find out what is the REAL problem.
Thanks again for all your input.

Welcome, SKURKA. Nice looking boat. If you look in the Glassic Library, you will find they have a 1960 salesman package for Bowman. It looks like the hood scoop was a common decorative item on their boats, even back to the 1957 models. They didn't show a Dragster model in 1960, but could have added that in 1961.

In a nutshell, the fat 50 parts used in the conversion / swap were the cowling, front and rear lower pans, transom bracket, flywheel with magneto pulley, recoil housing, bendix, external front throttle linkage, and rewiring for the use of the fat 50's wiring harness, control box, and dash ignition. The only "loss" is the 75's charging system. But, I have a 31 series AGM battery, magneto which is self powering and doesn't draw electricity, and a recoil starter. Sweet and simple.

Wow - you really have brought that boat back from the brink of being crushed at the dump. Nice work.

That stern light was made by Perko. The original lens was made from very thin transparent plastic - yours is pretty dang close to what it looked like. The original had a flat top and there were a a series of tiny ridges molded around the inside of it. Your only hope is to find a good one (good luck) or to make one up like you did. Be sure to use a short "button" style bulb and not a full length bulb - as the tall bulb will melt a white spot into the lens.

I'm sure one of you know.....Did they use the original design roof more than one year? If you ever tried to use the boat with this roof you would know why they changed it. However, for me, despite the extremely user unfriendly nature of the roof, it looks so cool, it is worth the contortion boarding methods necessary. (at least until I get old and stiff)

My take is to always try and do my best work on whatever I do. Take the time and strip it, you will be work ahead because in the end your new paint will last longer and the boat will be something you are proud of. I started out with numerous layers of paint on my 50's aluminum runabout, the last of which had only been put on a year before and it was already looking terrible. You can check it out by clicking on my link below.

Posted this in another area before I saw this one. I had a severe cavitation problem on takeoff and tight turns with my little 16' Glasspar delMar with a 65 hp Mercury. Running a 12.5" 16p prop with no cupping on the blades. Once it got rolling it would really dig in, but getting up there took a while and was like slipping the clutch on a manual shift car. I put on an original style Doel-Fin and I was amazed at the improvement. No more slipping on hole shots, and a lot better in tight turns at full throttle. Still working on finding the perfect prop for this rig, but for now the Doel-Fin has really upped my enjoyment of the boat.

Good to know Bruce. I've been running 24:1 since I got the boat back in the water 3 years ago, but I always put a half a bottle of Seafoam in each tank to help against the carbon build up. I was afraid the 50:1 would be way to lean for the old motors.

Second outing resulted in another leasson - I NEED TO INSTALL THE DEPTH FINDER THAT MY SON GAVE ME! I bent the prop - probably hit a fish trap, so not sure the depth finder would have helped, but I will install it soon. Wasn't too bad so the wife and I were able to limp back to the boat launch at idle.

I'm learning about this boating stuff - but I learn the hard every time it seems. Having fun though !

Hi Larry:
Thanks for the reply. Great engine. Mine is powered with a Ford Windsor 351/Velvet Drive. I had a '61 Owens 27 ft Sea Skiff a number of years ago with the same power. Very reliable. I am interested to find out the fuel consumption. Probably not tuned to the degree your 350 is but these engines are definitely better paired with these boats than the 283s that I think were the choice back then.

Will keep in touch.
Cheers

I've always found it easier to start from scratch than try to untangle what's already there. Even if no one else has had their fingers in it, the factory wiring jobs are generally not the neatest installations in the world.

Hope I'm not overstepping the rules here but I'm currently working on the same motor, and my question may end up helping both of us...I'm into re-sealing the gear case. Upon dis-assembly, I notice gray RTV sealer around the spaghetti seal flange and all the screw heads, is this recommended? Also, I'm changing the bottom cover, because the old one had broken skeg, there's no magnet in the used replacement. I pried the mag out of the broken cover, but it will not slide into the replacement cover, is it ok to file the mag down to fit? Also is there any 'timing' or certain position that the gear/clutch dogs & cradle should be in for re-assembly? Thanks...

Thanks John. The bilge isn't exactly sealed. I should've said there's no access to it. All there is, is a tiny drain plug at the transom near the keel. For rainwater, there's a std size drain plug for the deck.

The boat right now only has one battery, but I was going to get a 2-bank switch to allow for future.

Thanks again,
Mark

I have to haul a 50's runnabout back and forth from FL to NC. By the time I figured the cost of axles, springs, tires, wheels, lights, and rollers on the trailer I had. It was only a few dollars more to buy a new trailer. Go ahead, bite the bullet and get something you know is reliable.
I have say that my family hauled a Cox camper loaded with camping gear a mini bike and a canoe all over the USA Canada and Mexico on 8" trailer tires and never had a problem with trailer bearings or tires. I have pic's of that trailer going though a tree in Cal. and Lake Louise Can. in the back ground. Anyone that tells you small tires can't take highway speeds, it's BS. Tire rubber is better today than is was in the 60-70's. When we stopped for fuel Pa would always get out and touch the wheels at the bearings befor he started pumping fuel.

Also make sure that you have enough fluid in the unit, tilt the unit all the way up and latch the transport latch to hold it up. Remove the fill cap and slowly add transmission fluid. Do not open the reservoir when the unit is in the down position, it is under high pressure.
Fill the reservoir until you cannot get any more in. Put the cap back on, release the latch and cycle the unit fully up and fully down. Keep your finger on the button until it "squeals" at the top and bottom. That squealing noise is the trapped air pushing past the relief valve. You need to chase the air out of the hydraulic side to the reservoir side. Tilt it up again, open the cap and add more fluid.
Repeat cycling, you should not hear any squeal at the limits, just the pump laboring.

I recently seen a 1972 Evinrude 50 hp with a clamp on bracket. Does anyone know if it's bracket could be put on my 1979 Evinrude 55 hp? The lower cowlings look the exact same as far as I can tell and so does the lower units. I'm thinking I will still use the clamp on bracket because dad isn't crazy about the drilling holes idea even though we may consider it later. It sounds like I can make a bracket for the cable steering. I've done modifying all of my life to everything I own (seems like anyways) so that shouldn't be a problem. Does anyone know if the brackets can be swapped out on these two motors?...like around a 72' 50 hp Evinrude and the 79' 55 hp Evinrude?

Might have been installed wrong last time the belt was changed? (It happens, it's easy to get it off by one tooth!) Does your compression still check out okay?

Definitely came to me that way. Idle was high right off the bat and couldn't lower it. I'll check the compression and pray

After re-timing she ran good with no problems.

Fortunately the 1000 & 1250 pistons are more tolerant to detonation than the newer "deflector" type, so likely you didn't hurt anything.

You might want to take a compression check just to make sure there aren't any issues.

If just for peace of mind...........ed

I'm hoping I have the same experience as you, Ed.

Thanks again guys

Some folks do have a narrower set of parameters as to what qualifies as a true "Glassic", and that's okay. (Labels are just other people's opinions IMHO, everyone is entitled to their own right!?) Good looking runabout, please do share some more pics and reports on your Dixie. (The 70's section is one of my favorite hangouts, even though I've NEVER been a fan of DISCO anything! LOL ) :) Mark, the reason for my above statement of "I don't know about "fiberglassic" comes from the original premise of this site calling 50s-early 60s fined/syled boats "fiberglassics". Before this site, they were all just old boats to me lol. Heck,70s and some 80s boats will prolly be the newer glassics someday if not already IMHO.

I've heard a few stories about doing them but I know one thing. Trying to fish downwind of a anchored houseboat in the process of cooking on one makes it hard to fish. One fellow told me about making a smoker and using wood pellets for a wood heater in it.

I hear you Dean. If our 1960 G-3 had not had the original windshield on it I would probably think the same way you do.
If only somebody could make one that looked EXACTLY like the
