I'm assuming you've now went with a coil with an internal resistor?
You say you have eliminated the orange wire, is this the wire from terminal strip to the coil? Eliminated completely or replaced with a regular non resistor wire?

ok guys you all have created a monster in me and my boat. the question of the day is i bought copper tubing to plug my drain tubes in my transom until the seacast sets up then i can form my permanent tubes in. i got the 5200 sealer to hold the tubes in place, the Question is will i be able to remove the sealer and tubes when the time comes or should i use another sealer for temporary jobs. ??????????? i am going to use wax on the tubes so i can remove them , i thought about plain duct tape, the seacast is not really runny so that might work and then use the 5200 for the final tube installation . any ideas

Thanks so much to everyone for all of the tips!

I just got back this evening.

Here's what I did:

Replaced all eight bearing and race sets. Replaced the 4 seals. I was able to get them from a local auto parts store for about $25 per hub. Packed with grease.

Had welded the fitting that holds the swing arm from the front axle to the rear axle.

Inspected closely all 4 springs and mounting hardware and had the two rear springs off for the weld repair.

Checked every nut and bolt for integrity and tightness. In other words I had most of the trailer apart. The axles looked good.

Replace the (4) 4.80x8 tires, wheels and lug bolts with new 5.70x8 tires and wheels.

Inflated the 4 new tires to 40psi (rated 50psi max).

Kept speed on trip to 65mph and under with a few 70's but very few.

Got real lucky and made it the 2,400 miles home without incident!

Thanks for all of the great tips including those that said 'Don't even think about it!'.

Before this site, they were all just old boats to me lol. Heck,70s and some 80s boats will prolly be the newer glassics someday if not already IMHO.

Hey frank, sorry I'm late to this, was in Baltimore all weekend for my daughters graduation, master's in Speech Pathology. Woo Hoo I get a pay raise! Well anyway I made a couple of polls with earth magnets on the bottoms. Actually cut an old 1/2" metal pipe "cheap badmitton pole" about 45" or so I think (did it a while ago), attached two earth magnets from an old hard drive and put an old tennis ball on top of each one. Stick one to the top of the receiver and one on the hitch and presto, look in the rear view mirror and line up the balls as you back up and when they're about an inch apart stop and check, should be able to crank right down on the ball and good to go. Same as the telescoping ones at Harbor Freight and saved $20 or so.

I have a backup camera on the Equinox and it really does come in handy. Thought about one for the truck. I'll have to keep this one in mind looks great!

I bought it a year ago had the upholstery redone, took it to a mechanic who just wanted to sell me another motor and never got it running. It sat it over the winter and last weekend we went through it and got it to fire up. Hopefully have it in the water soon. The Galaxy 17' and up looks like it would be an excellent boat for midsize lakes with a nice deep V and a high gunwale. One thing I did notice is there isn't much price difference between mid 70's and mid 80's boats currently listed and they look about the same. This one seems to be a fair deal and it's a 1986

Sounds like you still have an ignition problem, take the mag plate off, replace the spark plug wires with new copper core wire, and clean or replace the plugs again. Check all the wires coming off the coils you wouldn't believe how often I see a just tuned up motor with the wire going to the points either rubbing on the crank which wears it through in short order or pinched under the coil and shorting to ground. Make sure that the kill switch wires are not worn through and touching the mag plate they are normally run under the coils and will be flattened but they have a protective sleeve to keep them from shorting just check them while you have it apart. Next up is to re-clean the points and make sure they are in good alignment then set the gap. Once all is good put the mag plate back on then check for good spark. Once you have established that it is firing on both it's time to set up the carb. Disconnect any levers that allow for adjustment with the cowl on and make sure that the needles move smoothly with some resistance, if they move too easily snug up the packing nut a tad and check again if it is better fine, if not replace the packing and try again. Once it is determined that the packings are OK turn the low speed needle in until it gently seats then turn it out 1 1/4 turns, next seat the hi speed and turn it back about 3/4 to 1 turn, these setting will get just about any old OMC to run. Now that we know we have good spark and basic carb settings move onto the lake (fun) portion of the exercise. With a helper to steer and throttle the boat fire up the engine let it warm up for a min or 2 then head out gradually moving to wide open, once the throttle is fully against the stop start to adjust the high speed needle towards lean and it should speed up when you pass the sweet spot it will start to slow down, move back towards rich until best speed is achieved. Next up is the low speed, gradually slow down until idle and adjust the low for best smoothness and lowest speed without coughing, this is best done at the dock as it will probably stall several times during this process. Once the low is set take it back out for another run to make sure it is running well at all boat speeds, once you are happy reinstall any adjustment levers put the cowl back on and call it done!!!
If possible avoid ethanol polluted gas most marinas offer regular grade ethanol free on the dock and depending on where you live Shell may offer Vpower fuel without ethanol at their street pumps

I did some work on the motor a few weeks ago and figured I would share. Since getting the motor freed up I wanted to do a compression test to see what the overall health of the engine was. Since my motor is manual start only I knew pulling it would not give good results. My solution was chucking up a 15/16 socket to my 1/2 drill with a few adapters. Results were good expect number 2, all 135 PSI, 58 PSI in number 2, oops!

I pulled off the transfer ports for the top two cylinders and found the problem. The first two piston rings were stuck, no spring action. The third ring was free. I placed that cylinder on TDC and filled it with my favorite penetrating oil. Reassembled the engine and left it sit.

I noticed I had no spark when turning the engine over. I pulled the mag and found the points clouded over. I cleaned them up and regapped them. I used a drill again to turn over just the mag and tested for spark, it was good, but not great. I think a proper cleaning and new condenser would correct the problem.

I however, had another idea. I have some spare ignition driver set ups for my 500 models and wanted to try it on this engine. I attached everything, but I don't think the large horseshoe coil would fit under the wrap with the switchbox. I believe the newer coil would fit great. I put the motor in the test tank and it fired right up. Fuel pump worked and the carbs performed great. The water pump was a bit weak. After running it awhile I pulled the transfer ports again and found my two sticking rings were unstuck. This engine still has the lead seal and I believe its a good one!
Watch it run

Subject: Using another motor's transom bracket for a motor - by: Bruce Gerard

The transom brackets are very different from each other and will not interchange. If your dad had lots of problems with the old engine it was not because of faulty design. The old OMC (johnson - Evinrude) engines are very rugged and reliable if they are properly treated and maintained. All motors must be properly maintained, and most will eventually develop issues that have to be corrected. These engines are easy to find and to maintain - if you have mechanical skills. The newer 2 cylinder OMC engines are very good engines. But keep in mind that a motor from 1979 is 34 years old - hardly new by any standard. If the 40 on the boat is a pile of junk - get another one - they are very easy to find. Just remember that these old engines will need some work to be put back into reliable service.

If you have already purchased the 1979 engine, and it's a good runner, it probably would be a good upgrade from the old "40". The 79 engine is "loop charged" which means it makes more horsepower than the old engine - while using LESS gasoline. I can promise you that the boat will be faster, handle better, and use less fuel with the newer engine on it. Don't worry about drilling the transom for the bracket - just use plenty of caulking on the holes to keep water out. The old "clamp on" motors were never a good idea for motors above 25 horsepower. The "clamp on" motors sometimes fall off transoms. It's way more common than you might think. The "bolt on" motor is far safer. You can make the old rope & pulley steering work with the new motor - or better yet - upgrade to a modern and far safer push-pull cable system of steering. I can show you how to keep your original steering wheel so it looks original.

Are you positive of the year and HP rating?
I just returned from Michigan, and I did remember to check out the Alumacraft...It is an 'FD' model, and is rated for 25hp, the s is not visible on the ID plate, but stamped into the center keel-transom support is FD-10xx, this is probably the s ...
Well, the original question resulted when I first removed the plugs in the fall after purchasing the boat and motor. When I did, plug, heli-coil and all backed out. So, I purchased a new/used head, which I could finger tighten new plugs very smoothly, installed the head, and thought that I would ask the question since I am used to working on land engines with cast iron blocks instead of aluminum outboard heads, ..... if you know what I mean. I just did not want to go down that same path again, and end up with what the previous owner left me. Thanks for all the help.
Regards,
StevieB

Super looking boat, but I would for sure do some outdrive service, unless done recent. I can't tell from the one pic, but is that a 270 Volvo, maybe 280? They are damn bullet proof, but need maintenance. For SURE replace the pump impeller. Should be a Jabsco/Sherwood mechanical pump either crank or belt driven. Nothing in the leg. Also if you run it on muffs, you will discover (280 at least, had one) about a 5/8th inch hole front bottom the bullet. Toss the muffs on and you will see. I always just shoved a home made plug in it Don't need a great seal, just stop some the water flowing straight out. Just guessing here, as better pix motor and outdrive would help.

Also HIGHLY suggest you replace the OD "Bellows". Ya get a crack/pin hole in it, and water will get in, destroy the bearings and U-Joints. Not hard to do, just yank the top "chunk" from the leg. No need to remove the whole leg.

And change the oil. And it holds almost 3 or 4 quarts straight motor oil. Think I used 40WT in mine. And use the fill hole, not the dipstick on top..takes forever.. And it takes time to drain on filling anyway. And get a new fill hole plug gasket every time.

Get a manual for that leg. Explains all. Good Luck!

Mark, sounds like it's propped perfectly for slalom skiing, but you'd probably get more speed out of it and drop rpm to a slightly-less-insane level by going with a prop with 2" more pitch.

The 1250 is a very torquey motor and it'll certainly pull a bigger prop with ease........ed

p.s. they are NOT known for their fuel thriftiness!

Thanks Ed. I think I'll start looking for a 19 pitch. Regarding the fuel consumption...damn!

I have a little experience with hydrostreams. I would caution anyone who buys one to take their time getting to know their handling characteristics. They are very fast (I mean way above 60 mph, some can do do three digits) and have a nasty tendency to kite at high speed. I investigated 3 accidents involving Hydrostreams where that happened and involved fatalities. You really need to know what you are doing with one of these.

I knew the dealer on Long Island, NY who sold these and he use to require his customers to take a boat handling course before they delivered the boat. He also sold them to the marine police as chase boats.

Great looking boat Larry. Nice Job. I have just purchased (subject to a survey tomorrow) a 1969 27 foot Owens Flagship that appears virtually identical to your vessel. The only difference I can see is that where the plate on yours says Concorde, mine says Owens. Can you tell me the beam of your boat and the power?

I am attaching a picture of my Owens.

Well gang anther year has past and still not in the water yet! In March of this year I traded the 115 hp. Johnson and a 50 hp. Merc. outboard even up for a 1999 9.9 Merc. elect start with a 4 gal. tank
whats up with that? I kept my 6 gal. tank for the Johnson will change fitting so it will fit the merc motor. Got everything ready to paint, think I will use (( Topside brushless paint ))! You used
a soft brush too put the paint on with so it leaves NO brush marks.
Will look like you just sprayed it with a gun, you have to mix a harder with the paint to get that wet look! It's 26.95 a Quart in my catalog, got any other Idea too help let me know!

the best is called dielectric grease. It comes in small tubes and is rather expensive (8-9 bucks a tube), but is by far better than just any old grease because it is electrically conductive, and keeps the corrosion out. But one rule is that anywhere you have electricity flowing on a boat, you are going to get corrosion. All contacts and connections need to be cleaned and grease annually. More often on saltwater.

I gave you a response on the main board about the tiny tach. Any tachometer that indicates it will work on a twin cylinder, 2 cycle, magneto ignition motor will work. They are getting very hard to find - as it seems few people equipped twins with tachometers. Most tachometers seem to be for 4 & 6 cyl outboards

Best place to mount is on the front of the bottom pan - just behind where the steering cable attaches to the engine. If there is a factory drilled hole in the bottom pan - go ahead and use that hole. If not, you will have to find a good location to put one. Use a heavy duty MOMENTARY push switch for this. It needs to be normally open - just like your starter button. Find the 2 wires that go to the magneto - if there is a plug on the side of the lower pan - they probably end there at the plug. Connect the wires to the switch (one wire per side of the switch) When the button is pressed and held in - it shorts the two wires together and stops the engine. That's all there is to it.

Hello Luke,

Yes, the intake is stock. From what I've gleaned from the Turbocraft brochures and tech data I have, there were three different grates offered. I can always change it if needed in the future since I do have two different ones currently. The lake I will be using this boat in is shallow and has a lot of weed patches. So I chose the more aggressive one.

Thanks for the offer of the spacer. I'll find out if we need the dimensions or the piece.

It's been a month, we need an update on your boat!

The flanged threaded piece on your tank the fuel gage is threaded to is called a bung. Yours is most likely soldered on to the tank. If the flange is the right size, that bung could be cut flush for a 5 screw type. It would be great to find a bung mount sending unit that would just screw on what you have, like the Joe posted but you would need the float to go with it.

I'm using aluminum "Gasser" style tanks in my Manta Ray. They did not come with the sending unit bungs so I need to weld them in. The new sending unit have a vertical float and will just thread on like like your gauge. The aluminum bung are about $20ea steel is cheaper. The only thing I don't care for on the new ones is the black plastic cap, like Joes brass one better. http://www.fiberglassics.com/images/fbfiles/images/007-20130515.JPG

noseeum,

WELCOME ABOARD.
(That's the good news")

Sadly, many Sea King boats of that period had "stick on" aluminum-foil-like stickers that once had the hull info on them - Unfortunately, the "stickum" wasn't very good & the stickers fell off or blew overboard, so you may NEVER know for sure.
(That's the bad news.")

My suggestion is to look carefully on the FG Library & see which boat is like yours.

Welcome to the FG world, you'll have a ball.
If you haven't already, be sure to check out http://www.fiberglassics.com/library/Elgin
for info about your boat.
I would also say that sure looks like a P-14,
http://www.fiberglassics.com/library/P-14
Perhaps the P-14 was private labeled as an Elgin for Sears.
A good overall read on fixing up an old runabout is Runabout Renovation by Jim Anderson, cheap on ebay and is a quick read. Keep in mind there are several methods to do most jobs on these old gals, so the book gives Jim's way but there are other ways equally valid.
Anyway, hope that helps.

Anyway, I also will have him start and run it on the hose before believing it runs. Last boat I bought for a restoration was a 70s disco glass boat, with one of the dreaded 75hp three cyl Mercs on it. The guy promised it ran and was pretty fast, and it DID start and rev with no load on it. BUT I was never able to get it to go anywhere when in the water. So a complete inspection is in order.

I'm getting a spare lower unit from Tim at the meet in June. I'll run that one while i go over the original.

You could probably do everything you said above in an hour but it'll take me 3 months and i don't want my boat out of commission for that long!

For what it's worth - I didn't have any luck with the Tiny Tach I once tried to use. I was assured that the model I purchased from Tiny Tach would work on a multiple cylinder engine. It did not. The tiny tach "reads" the ignition pulse through induction, not direct connection. You wrap the center detector lead of the coaxial tachometer pickup around the outside of a rubber spark plug wire. There is a ground strap that is connected to the engine block, that is supposed to prevent stray signals from getting to the tiny tach and making false readings. But there is a problem - the spark plug wires and the distributor cap "leak" ignition impulses to the other plug wires. This is not enough energy to cause a misfire, but it was enough energy to trigger the tiny tach and "fool" it's reading. I tried it on an Evinrude V4, I placed the pickup in many locations but it never worked right. Ad idle, the tach said the engine was turning 3,200rpm. It was reading the pulses of all 4 cylinders - multiplying the 800 impulses per minute (800 rpm) of cylinder number 1 by all four cylinders. I sold the unused tach on eBay for 30 bucks, because the dealer would not accept the tach in return.

I accidentally ordered a cotter pin instead of a shear pin with Bill R. some time ago. In order to avoid high postage costs for such a small item: is there a Johnson/Mercury/Yamaha or whatever alternative that fits? All bearings and oil seals have very common standard sizes so I thought this might as well be the case for the drive pin which I measured at 1/4 x 1-1/4.

Ken, I usually launch on the Dinwiddie side at the public boat landing by the dam (free). Another good place is Seven Springs Marina on Chesterfield side ($7). The lake offers some decent fishing for bass, crappie, perch, catfish ect....It does get choppy and congested during the peak times during summer on weekends. Any day Mon- Fri is decent.

The beast roared to life. OK more like a Breapp, Brearpp, Berapp... but it was spinning. The new battery required a full charge and I kept it on a charger over night but it turned over the motor. Then we dug through the fuel system and got it to fire. Once, my el-cheapo starter relay stuck and the starter just kept turning and turning and I had to disconnect the battery. We put the old made-in-the-usa starter relay back in and it was just fine. So much for the "insolvable" starter issue.

On to fuel, I decided to pull all three carbs and found one to have a messed up metering rod spring and pin. I pulled a carb off my donor motor but it is a different so I couldn't steal the parts. Here's what I need anybody know where I can get one? (It's a pretty simple part so I will make one if needed.)

The motor has an aftermarket fuel pump on it so I pulled then one from the donor motor and I'm going to go through it and might put that one on. Looking forward to burning some fuel soon! http://www.fiberglassics.com/images/fbfiles/images/metering_rod_spring_pin.jpg

I converted it to a short shaft to fit my short transom boat but have done nothing with the boat and may not. So rather than letting this gem just rot away in the Garage I want to sell it. I will be putting it on the for sale list but wanted to know if anyone would be interested. I still have the long shaft stuff if you need a long shaft for your boat. I purchased the short shaft stuff new.

Besides a Mother's Day Present, it was a present to all boaters on your lake. A piece like that is better on the shore than floating in the water. I sure wouldn't like to hydro over that! Thanks for going back and making it a present, from all of us boaters.

Also, you are right, a listing of pictures of items found floating in a lake or river would be an interesting read.

I just joined the site and have a 1958 Farallon that I am starting to restore. My side trim seems incomplete, as it looks like a metal frame that should have something in the middle. It borders a white inset on the back 1/3 of the boat. I'll be happy to send you some close-up pictures if that will help. I would also be interested in seeing what someone else's looks like to get an idea of how to restore mine.

I have found that 1708 works well for going around bends and being very strong.
I was thinking the same thing Randy. Sanding the edges of the wood to help "round them over" a little also helps. The 1708 biax can be pre-folded to put a crease in the fabric. When wetted out on the csm side before laying in position it helps stick it where you want it as well, making final wet out much easier.

Good luck with it Frank, I know you'll work it out. ;)

It can be that it is too lean, or the timing can be a little off as well. But it sounds like it is possibly a couple things. I would redo the pump first if it is unknown when it was last done. I have seen motors pumping very well and still get too hot for comfort. Plus, yes in a sense they do run too hot to touch the cyls if that is what you are asking.

Your memory is good Mark. The Mantaay and trailer bounced off the semi trailer going down the road. Still have the MR, but have not been able to finish it. An FG member stopped by a few days ago by chance to check it out. Every time the neighbor sees me with a tool they try to have me arrested. I'll need to rent shop space and thats a 1 year lease. A second cat to restore should fill that year and maybe get a 3rd one done.

Here is something I've been looking at. You can get it in textured or smooth or you can put a coat of smooth over textured (as recommended by mfr) which is what I might do. The military testimonials are impressive.

The worst problem I had with my red paint was getting good coverage, red tends to be a bit on the transparent side.

If red gelcoat is taken care of it will last a VERY long time.

The red gelcoat on our 1960 Glasspar G-3 is ALL ORIGINAL with the exception of a small area on the splashwell. This boat is now FIFTY THREE (53) years old! http://www.fiberglassics.com/images/fbfiles/images/DSC_0698-20130504.JPG

Go to the Glassic Library here. There are some earlier brochures. Also look at Red Wing Fiberglass Products and Midwest Marine. The latter two are where the "Mariner" name originated.

Anyone driving down with an open tow hitch to central Florida? I am getting pushed into a corner. We close on our house in a few weeks. Located northern Illinois. I really want to keep my 14 foot Playmaster. But I can not afford to ship professionally or to make a separate trip for it. I am hoping someone would do it for gas money one way. Mendota to Tavares/Mt Dora. I will install new tires and make sure trailer is 100% as in lights and wheel bearings. Thanks Dave

OK- Here is what was settled on. I ordered a Solas 11.8" X 11 pitch. This size came after a bunch of calculations from the prop shop and other mariners in the know. It will be here Friday and I'll run it this weekend to test. I also got the tach working. It is an old brass tach and I am really glad to have it functioning. I'll be able to get a good feel for what this motor is turning. I'll post the results after the water test.

So, the original windshield is cracked . yellow and just cruddy.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e193/TerryByer/IMG_1821_zpsbec9bd40.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/TerryByer/media/IMG_1821_zpsbec9bd40.jpg.html)

I got this 55(?) Thunderbird windshield for free on Craigslist.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e193/TerryByer/IMG_1825_zps1e83bbd0.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/TerryByer/media/IMG_1825_zps1e83bbd0.jpg.html)

I'm gonna set it the other way for a sleaker look,
and better airflow behind the wheel.

The first thing I notice is the big gap under the glass.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e193/TerryByer/IMG_1887_zps0e709d27.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/TerryByer/media/IMG_1887_zps0e709d27.jpg.html)

So, it had to be filled.....

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e193/TerryByer/IMG_1889_zpsfd027088.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/TerryByer/media/IMG_1889_zpsfd027088.jpg.html)

As long as the windshield is Off I might as well squirt some fresh paint on the boat...

Hardware removed....

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e193/TerryByer/IMG_1951_zpsd7eb064e.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/TerryByer/media/IMG_1951_zpsd7eb064e.jpg.html)

All masked up...

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e193/TerryByer/IMG_1960_zps2bfe7fc0.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/TerryByer/media/IMG_1960_zps2bfe7fc0.jpg.html)

Meanwhile, I was reshooting all the white stuff in the back...

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e193/TerryByer/IMG_1968_zps8f38cfb8.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/TerryByer/media/IMG_1968_zps8f38cfb8.jpg.html)

Now I have to start concentrating on the framework of the windshield....
That's the original gasket, I'm gonna recycle it.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e193/TerryByer/IMG_1953_zps8b2ce820.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/TerryByer/media/IMG_1953_zps8b2ce820.jpg.html)

Here it is siliconed on....

Now, Everyone who get's in the boat naturally grabs the top of the windshield
for support, Myself included. So I am going to build the frame out of steel.

Here I've marked out the two pieces of channel I'm gonna use.
It was an old supprot for a piec of printing equipment.

Upon, initial testing, I got no spark in either cyl. I have changed coils, points, condensers, plugs and wires. So I won't know if the old ones are ok until I test them in another motor, which I'm sure I will.
Interestingly the throttle (butterfly) shaft was set up in this motor, which suggests me that it was probably sitting for a very long time...Thanks for the input...BTW, I didn't think my pics were posting because I can't view them myself...???

Hi everyone, it is my pleasure and honor to announce the 11th Annual Switzercraft Reunion Regatta and Hot Boat Rally will be held at THE BIG BASIN MARINA in Channahon Illinois on Saturday July 13,2013....Starts at 10am and were hoping and probably going to see other groups join us.
The Badger State Hydro Association says they will have people there and remember this event is open to all boaters,,,,the older the boat the better, but we love all you guys and your rides.
Lets make this a wonderful time and fun get together....You guys with the extremely fast boats...Help me wow the crowd with fly bys.
I have also agreed to host the 12th Annual Regatta too but we will talk about that in 2014. Come on lets prove to all those non believers that us Hot Boaters,Racers, and Antique Outboarders are one big River Rat Family and make this one crazy event...
If anyone wants a flyer or more info write me at Tlord91154@aol.com or call me at 815 954 6483....Tom (and April) Arambasich

I took these photos of "Bettie Page" and "Pathfinder" at the recent Blue Ridge ACBS show in Hartwell, GA. Betty drew her share of admirers and I hear she won some kind of award, which I was not in attendance to receive...whatever. Also, here are two shots of the 1958 Chris-Craft Commander, "Pathfinder," which we restored last year...same event. (Note the 48 star flag.) I overheard one admirer say regarding the cruiser, "She's got a nice ass." Now that's a compliment!

Here in Holcombe we still have ice (unsafe but still ice covered) in some areas. Yesterday I needed to test run a fresh 40 Johnson rebuild & was able to back into the ramp & pull power with the boat strapped to the trailer. Ice should be gone in a day or two.

As for Bill in LaCrosse, we are going to be sending you plenty of water. The gates are open & the Chippewa is flowing.

Since your boat is 1967 to 1969, I would look for a complete replacement 120/140/165 with the hydraulic lines coming out the bottom. This will give you trim also, but you will need the donor pump, trim cylinders, plumbing & reverse lock valve. You could look for a 1967 thru 1969 120/140/160 with trim also. These would have 2 lines on each side instead of 1 like yours. Again, you will need the associated extra parts. I would shy away from the 1967 thru 1969 model because there are 4 different part number noses & they are a bitch to change & typically need to be special ordered. The bottom mounted lines are all 4 the same part number.

From my experience, the earliest bottom mounted units are OK except for the top mounted trim limit switch goes bad & is NLA. So you will need to bypass it. The next generation with side mounted trim limit switch usually will have worn out splines on the steering tiller. So pick & choose used parts carefully.

Look on the top of the frame tube just to the front of the right fender mount. Mine has a crudely stamped 8 digit number which I believe is "factory", since mine still has original paint and the numbers were stamped prior to painting.
Mine are hard to see, so any subequent coats of paint would probably cover them completely. Ed

New here, even though I've been a long time lurker.

I just posted in the glassifieds the ad for the 1959 lonestar Nassau I have for sale. Just asking what I bought it for. Comes with boat, motor and trailer. I'm joining the military and have no place to put it. I thought about putting it on craigslist but it would kill me to see such a beautiful boat be destroyed by someone who has no interest in it. Please take a look.

I know the lack of pictures is frustrating, but if you are seriously interested I can send you pictures from my cell phone (that's the only means I have at the moment) eight one 6 6 one 6 zero 6 zero 6 ask for Josh.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email (although I only check it maybe once a week) at campfield(dot)josh(at)gmail(dot)com

Contact is better by phone. First person with the cash takes it.

Comes with bill of sale (all that is needed to register both the boat and trailer in Kansas) If this is a problem for you, contact me and I can register the boat and trailer before the exchange (but it will add around 30 dollars to the price).

Thanks,
Josh

OK, I removed and cleaned the starters, and lubed the bushings. The short starter did finally roll the engine over, but only for a few seconds, then would just turn slowly. I switched to the long starter and it seems to work fine...Thanks for the help http://www.fiberglassics.com/images/fbfiles/images/58_Super_SeaHorse.JPEG

Glad you mentioned the space between the seals. I could have driven in the outer seal until it contacted the inner one, if you hadn't mentioned it.

You're right about the missing thrust washer. There was none in that area from the first time I pulled the prop to change it out. My Clymer Manual doesn't show it but describes the front piece as "thrust hub and washer". I have another manual that shows it in the blow-up picture and calls it a thrust washer. By split washer, you mean split like a lock washer, only thinner?

I did find a piece of 1-1/4", thick wall PVC (gray) pipe that very closely matches the seal O.D and I.D. the walls are 3/16 thick, enough to provide good support where it contacts the seal and large enough I.D. to clear the prop shaft. I screwed a regular iron 1-1/4" pipe nipple on the threaded end for a good hammer tapping surface.

This may or may not work, but if it doesn't I'm only out the cost of the seals and can still go further with dismantling and doing it the correct way. If the seals hold, I can proceed to pressure and vacuum testing the unit to see how everything else is doing.

I can't afford to do the chrome now so I cleaned it up a bit and put it back on. It is far from show quality and it will be used for fishing. The windshield was in very poor condition so I cut her down. I had to shelf my outboard lower end rebuild for a little longer due to funding. I had to put new brakes and rotors on my wife's car. If I get the seats done I will use her with my Honda for now. I got the wooden splash rail back on and the mounting blocks for the seats are cut and fitted. I had a lot of rasping to do to fit those. I'm deleting the middle seat but it will be able to be added easily if I decide to. Still have to get step pads on the Tee Nee fenders. http://www.fiberglassics.com/images/fbfiles/images/April_043_Copy.jpgBow light is not on yet because I'm converting it to LED. http://www.fiberglassics.com/images/fbfiles/images/April_042_Copy-20130425.jpg http://www.fiberglassics.com/images/fbfiles/images/April_040_Copy.jpg

Randy: I to am repainting a 1958 35 HP Evinrude cowling. It will be installed on a 1969 Evinrude 40 HP. I can confirm the the cowling was painted after assembly. Got the paint from North York Marine. The highlight paint color on the side of the cowling looked to be black. After having removed the chrome it turns out it was a very dark blue. I had already ordered the paint so I decided to paint it black instead of the original blue. Have one more color to add so will do that today and reassemble next week. This cowling has three colors, white, gray and dark blue making a minimum of a three day painting project.

Now that is interesting. I just purchased a Rule 1500 CPH pump for my 18 Skagit. It has a built-in float switch. I was really worried because I noticed in the catalog that they are available either in 12 V or 24 V. So rushing out to the car to check it, it turns out the pump was indeed 12 V. Like a lot of things at this time of the year these were the only pumps present on the shelf. They were all sold out of 800 CPH and smaller pumps. But on retrospect the 1500 will certainly do the job. I do have a sump and the pump will go right in the middle of that. They also come with enough wire that you don't have a problem putting the electrical joint in the water, in fact they recommend you don't do that. They also want you to put all the electrical connections well above the pump.

It has a one and eighth output, and I bought two Hull fittings to mount above the waterline that will allow me to the pump to that. Looks like in general this is one of the easiest things to do. The face of the pump which is removal has screw holes for bolting the pump to the bilge. All I need now is some kind of piping to change the angle of the output from sideways to vertical.

On the Internet, I found several hundred Mercury outboard wiring diagrams. Everyone that I saw tended to have no ground other than the negative terminal of the battery. While just about every electronic device that I recently purchased for the boats as a reference or even some cases a specific round wire there appears to be no need for ground plate or other device.

This could be the solution unless I get very noisy radio or GPS reception then I will have to revisit the subject.

One of the key things that popped up in my investigation is a need to wrap a wire around the fill fitting and connected to the ground on the gas tank near the gas gauge sender. That in turn would be connected to the ship's ground. The diagram includes a wire it runs to the ship's ground. I don't know if I want to hook that up to the battery or not? http://www.fiberglassics.com/images/fbfiles/images/Gas_Tank-20130425.jpg

GF - Those are just pics I found, so I'm not sure.

I think I've tried every wiring combination and still can't get it to work. I thought maybe the rectifier or stator were bad so I did a simple check with a DVM and it's definitely charging. It's starting to appear that my tach might be bad.

I'm also getting voltage from the brown wire out the Mercontrol, but I have no idea what it's supposed to be. The only thing I haven't tested is the tach harness. I'll check it tomorrow. Does anybody know how to test it?

Thanks,

Hi Wayne,
Welcome to the Homelite/Bearcat classic outboard forum!

Did some boat cleaning Sunday and lit off my Homelite for the first time this year. New tags on the hull, new tires on trailer. I'm thinking it may get a new top this year. It's about ready for it's first outing. Engine ran perfect as usual. I haven't run my F block engine since '09 and am thinking of running it this year also. Would like to make another run with the 85hp as it too has sat since the fall of '10.

Actually, going by the scale of the lower unit, I'd say it's the HD model, not the DT model. The HD was the 2.5hp version, similar, same era, but smaller.

Take out the seat and use a hand mirror to look at the underside of the lip between the motor well and the cockpit. Should be there. Serial should start with 10 and be five digits long.

Looks exactly like a GW Invader 8-footer. Splash copies were made by Columbia, etc. If it is a GW, there should be a serial number located underneath the motor well (on the underside of the lip just behind the seat - use a hand mirror or crawl in upside down). There are pix of similar ones on the yahoo groups GW Invader site.

We had one for several years. Lots of fun. Expect to get very wet.

around Tennessee here . I had a few pics in my albums, but not
viewable.. We had some older posts / threads, but I can not locate

Search opther sites , or google, may cross reference someone
selling a model on Craig list or view another pic, But my

as a mini update I went out a bought a heat gun and it made a world of difference, although i have not made a whole lot of progress on stripping the deck. the cracks seem to be delamination of the deck possibly. I will post more pictures as I make a bigger dent. One interesting thing I did see was standing water in the center battery tray, which on further review was a crack in the corner of the battery tray which expelled water as I pressed down. My sudden fear is that of the core integrity. As a newbie to the tap test, I did not seem to notice any definite signs of dullness from the surrounding hull, but I could be wrong. That is unless the gas can/battery tray are glued down to the floor.

It does look great as-is!

If you want to fancy-fy it a bit, you could add some "tasteful" pin-striping in a matching aqua color.

I wouldn't think the ACBS Judges would take off too many points for that!

Cheers.......ed

I have an Attwood finned bow light with a handle that I'd like to trade for the same light without the handle. The boat has a recess for the bow handle, so I'm going to leave it.

I'll be moving the horn to the side so it won't be so crowded.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Alan,
I think that the vents are more than likely original. We had a similar arrangement on a 1967 Larson All-American. The vent on the deck was to vent the built in gas tank that was installed up front and the two in the back vented the gas storage area in the back, where the battery also resides. I think that the caution was in the build up of gas fumes with the probability of a spark from a short in the wiring. This rear storage area was an enclosed area with a hinged cover. I think also that the handles are an owner add-on. They look to be from the local hardware store. I've got the '69 catalog along with most of the other Lund brochures and the 19'K-19 only appears in a couple of catalogs much earlier. No deck additions on these earlier examples.

I suppose now its just a matter of finding one. Don't suppose you have one in great shape just sitting around do ya? Seriously though, are the enough interchangeable parts between the 85 hp and the 950 ss to make it worthwhile to pick up an 85 hp of the same year range for parts and use the lower unit to get the gear ratio?
