TOPIC: 1970 Merc 500m -->500ES?

1970 Merc 500m -->500ES? 4 years 8 months ago #140376

Hi All,
Putting together a 50hp Merc I got because it has a pull start - was thinking I could just put a starter motor in it and voila, best of both worlds. I'm sure that was naive, because I see now that while there is a space for the starter motor, the flywheel has no teeth. I have a later 65hp with no compression I was going to poach for parts. Is it feasible that I can: 1. find a 500ES flywheel and fit? or 2. pull the flywheel from the 65hp and fit?
I have some other questions re. carb and water pump kits - would LOVE to speak to a human, but oldmercs.com don't seem to be answering their phone.

Years ago I had a 1970 50 hp Merc without electric start. I also had a box of parts from a Mark 58A that I junked out. I checked out the flywheel and starter and they bolted right up and the timing marks even lined up. It was still working great when I sold it years later.
