TOPIC: 1977 Mercury 1150 Prop Shaft Seals Question

1977 Mercury 1150 Prop Shaft Seals Question 6 years 10 months ago #132097

I am replacing the prop shaft seals on my 1977 Mercury 1150. I am about to install the new seals and have a question.

The bearing carrier surface where the outer metal rim of the oil seal sits is scratched. What should I put on the outside of the metal oil seal surface to make sure the scratches are sealed? I was going to use Loctite Blue 242 but thought maybe something else would seal the mating surface of the carrier/seal better. The manual calls for Loctite A but I have never heard of that.

Thank you,
Kevin

Ed,
Thank you for the information. I'll give it a try.
Do you have any experience with removing seals installed with Loctite 609?

Heat is your friend when trying to remove fasteners or seals installed with loctite.. Careful use of a propane torch or a heat gun will help weaken the "death grip" of red loctite and ease your removal efforts..

The Locktite Retaining Compound applies green. Goes on after you install the bearing or seal. Thin, it works into all the gaps around the parts, and dries as a brittle, opaque green. to remove, just break it with a soft blow from a hammer.
