Hi All,
I mentioned a while back that my 1960 Merc 350 sank. I got it going again last summer and had fun with it for a while...until the magneto pilot assembly seized (best name I can find for it from the parts manual, picture below). I guess water got inside the bears and rusted the them. Should have re-greased. I'm trying to disable it now but having troubles figuring out how to open it up. There are two tab in the top (red line). Do I flatten those tabs down then unscrew the.....?top?...green line?

Oh. one other question. Looks like there are two bearings in this. Are these just the regular sealed type bearings that I can replace?

Thanks!

yes that is the way to take it apart. first take the square key and spacer off, then drive the shaft down and out. then the tabs then unscrew the cap off. then the bearing comes out the top. while you are there take the rest of it apart clean and grease. will last another 50 years. replace the belt at this time. might as well do the bearings in the mag and be finished with it.

Thanks Dave. This will be my project tonight.
Yup, got a new belt waiting. The old belt snapped when this whole thing seized up.

I guess this isn't what the bearing should look like. Lol. Got a new one on order.

Be sure you get SEALED not shielded bearings.

If it takes sealed bearings, what is the grease fitting for?

to lube the equalizer. take it apart and clean all the OLD GREASE out and lube lightly. or the old stuff will hang up in time. same with over grease.

I got the sealed version of the bearing.
Should I still grease the outside to prevent possible rust in the future?

By the way, I moved on to the magneto its self. Found those bearings, especially the upper bearing, to be not too smooth. So, Now I have ordered those as well.
