1958 Glass Magic Playmaster restoration/repair 12 years 5 months ago #48650

I hate to say restoration when its actually repairs. Restoration to me also means staying strictly to what the factory did.
So my goals are simple. Have a really cool boat without "breaking" the bank. Getting it useable as quickly as possible. Which means using any donor engine, controls and steering.
Has to have two tone "50's" colors, I do not know yet what colors.

So first job was finding cool boat. See "Iam not bragging but I have the coolest boat" thread

Than a good scrubbing

I than started buffing the trim on the boat. One piece came out great. The next not so good. They used a little stainless and a lot of anodized aluminum. So I will need to do the "drano" trick to remove anodization.

I than started grinding off the white gell coat. As far as I know this fiberglass looks great with all issues residing with the thick cracked color coat.

Its always hard in the beginning ! You start ripping into it and wonder "What the heck have I started" ? After you get it all cleaned out and dry it starts to look like a boat again. Go slow and think it all out and then it starts to make sense to you ! It does start to get fun the farther you go. Nice pictures of your boat and it will be really sweet when it's finished

Your airplane wings are awful little and you forgot the tail. It will never fly. Well it looks nice. What is it? I'm sure the boat will be fabuglass when your done. You can find some real funky stuff working on boats. My Tee Nee Trailer had at least a 5 gallon bucket of nuts inside it. I picked the nose up and washed-floated them out.

Not half assed but all assed backwards !!!
When this all started most everything seemed good. I really thought I was to remove gell coat fix transom and paint. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

Once inside and upside down the bitter truth was dug out. As usual I am alone in shop. So I cut it apart and raised. If I had planned for this it would have started right side up.
I am just glad I do not know what I am doing!! If I did .....

Been there, going through it now. It's a disease that progresses slowly at first and never ends. Started my first rebuild in 1982 and actually lost count of the boats that have been in and out of my life. Well over 30. The one you think you're going to keep turns out to be the one sold to get a better one, a different one, a newer one, a cooler one, a bigger one, a smaller one, and on and on. It's a learning experiance you deal with. Consider this site as moral support and the largest mutual admiration society you will ever know.

your doing fine dave,we have been there too,but one suggestion, lay the deck across some 2x4s,4x4s would be better, the way its leaning against the building it could lose some of its shape and be harder to put together, john

That spot was only temporary. I will take your advice on storing it.
I am thinking about closed cell foam between stringers.
I need to choose a path for powering this. I am torn between basic 1960 Evinrude (stock configuration) or
Late model jet. I really can not move forward till that is decided.

The hull had to get stored out of main shop. So I have been collecting parts and pieces. I did not like grinding and purchased a large media blaster. After repairing valves I hope to be able to use to remove gell coat.

Re:1958 Glass Magic Playmaster restoration/repair 12 years 3 months ago #53138

Dave,

Now you are talkin.... But wow! That thing has more pipe fittings than a boiler room. I have a pressure pot as well, got it 2nd hand from a neighbor for 20 bucks. Need to do some fixing on it too. I have no 1st hand experience blasting glass yet, but I will be starting up on it soon. I have talked with Larry McKay from Vintage Boatworks about his experimentation with blasting glass/gelcoat. So far, the only thing that has worked is sand, or anything harder. Soda does nothing, neither do nut hulls or corn. The fiberglass is too resillient. You need sharp & hard media to cut into it. The blasting cabinet in my shop uses Aluminum Oxide, and while it is an excellent abrasive, it is expensive. Sand is the least expensive of all - so I'm going to use sand. PLEASE be warned - if you don't know; Sand is full of silica. Silica in your lungs will kill you, if there is enough of it. Do the work outdoors, and if there is a breeze blowing even better. You must wear a quality resperiator - one that filters out the timy silica particles. The little white paper masks won't come close to doing the job. The best way is to wear a full blasting hood that has a fresh air supply that is sent to it from a low pressure line. This is very serious - your health is No. 1. Blasting will go fast if you have a big enough compresser, and the results will be great.

PS - you are right - grinding glass stinks.

Re:1958 Glass Magic Playmaster restoration/repair 12 years 3 weeks ago #56878

Due to cold weather fiberglass repair has been on hold. Probably a good thing. I had a chance to practise fiberglass and so my confidence is much higher. I have decided to fill voids with floation foam. Never will hull bottom fill with mud.

Now fully understand about engine lengths.

But another problem has risen. Bow lights and Ebay. So many cool ones. And apparently I have good ($$$) taste. So after being out bid numerous times, this one came home and under budget.

Due to seeing what you guys have made, I have decided to just go slow. It is too cool to hurry.

Just a tiny bit of progress. Weather is warming and I have top half back outside. So when I get tired of welding or painting, I can go outside and relax grinding fiberglass.
I have been reading and reading and reading.
I got a nice surprise, guy I got the Playmaster gave me all of the tags while in Tavares. I have actual serial number !!. :) . I have sent off some forms and $$. I should have a proper title soon. I hate messed up paper work.

Another good score on the tags. Good luck with the registration and title. Last month I finally re-registered my Herters. The year of the boat was wrong on the title so I went to the DNR office when I applied and made sure that they changed the year of manufacture. The registration card came in the mail last week and they never changed a #$%@& thing.

Hopefully the tags will make it a lot easier... Dealing with the paperwork side of things can be a real pain. I'm lucky to live in a state that is pretty easy, we only have bills of sale for watercraft, no titles... But other states that I have lived in have been tougher. I've seen some really nice boats scrapped because they couldn't get papers!

All I had to do to make it cold , windy and rainey was pull the shell out to work on it. April 26th and deck had slippery frost on it. Grrrrr
Called on title. All of My paperwork is now in order. Now just sit and wait.

While I was sitting and waiting and finishing my third beer.......
Breath-alyzers need to be installed on computers and phones...
Craigs list... There was my engine. Crap no spare cash!
Call the guy up. Got the life history of engine. How his Dad bought new. How it was properly stored since last run. Told him My cash flow problem- no problem small deposit holds till...?
This project has put me in such a great mood. It looks cool as cool. Its (so far) not really costing much. Its dang good therapy.

Finally warm out. Between projects I have been adding my "special" filler. My left over plastic body filler cut with fiberglass resin. It almost self levels. Than with long board all will be flat and smooth.

My 1959 Mark engine appears to be excellent. Minor points cleaning, a shot of carb cleaner, 6 pulls and it fired.

Now in process of ordering impellers and such to get to really hear it run. Taking Jims advice, I will be resealing entire engine before active duty.

Gallons of filler, mounds of dust. I have to say, I really do not think I will do another boat as rough as this. I put a sealer coat of epoxy on. This allows me to really see all the bad areas. Plus it can sit in other garage for a few weeks. I need to take a break from it.

Don't take a long break you'll get discouraged. I found that no matter how much filler and primer you put on there will still be pit holes and cracks that are missed. You will find these when you put your finish coat on. Sad but true. I resigned after several attempts to make it "perfect". It ain't gunna happen unless you are a pro body man in a shop with ideal conditions and a paint booth.
The pictures cover up a lot imperfections.
The title is a major step. Would hate to see someone put in all the love, sweat and tears and not be able to use it.

Good move! Hate to see someone sink a ton of $$ into a project and then not be able to get it legal. I did that with my present project but WI is fairly easy to get registered.
