Sure - now that our 25,000 miles of snowmobile trails are closed for the season and NOW we get slammed with several snowstorms in April. Guess I can ride around in the yard and check on the covered boats.

I love my snow! New tires on the Jeep and we are ready to roll. It’s not like we are getting mountain pass snow or Yooper record snow. The plows keep up with it, so as long as there is no white outs, we should be good to go. Not crazy hilly roads if I watch my route. It’s all good.

What motor would you rather be running?

Thinking of going to my local boat ramp just for drill. Nothing the Jeep couldn't handle.

This is north of Rhinelander, Wisconsin. That is the fish cleaning house. Open for game fishing is about 2 week away. Crazy, but not the first time that instead of usually fishing from a boat, many will be ice fishing. I better bring some friends with chain saws if we want to put the boat in. Likely we will get one of those snap your neck quick springs and bam - it will be 70-80. Good thing I have a few frozen perch fillets left in the freezer.

Boy! I hope you're right. the county and DNR should be putting docks in by now. Walleye's on the Fox are in with a 28" minimum.
Picked up my license last week just before this last blizzard. Blame it on me.

Hey Cal, What is the best way to restore the transom on the Rocket?

I've seen your other posts about the pourable stuff, never used it myself. So far the two rockets I did had good strong dry transoms, don't know how that happened but even drilling a bore hole found dry solid wood. If replacing the transom your best bet would be to use a cut off saw, one of those vibrating ones and remove the inside. The top and bottom hull sections would have to be separated though, cut around the outer edge of the inside and take it off in one piece. make a cardboard pattern of the transom and epoxy two 3/4" plywood sheets together, cover the finished replacement with glass mat and then glue it back in, replace the part you cut out.

Took a run to the local boat ramp a mile from my house. Two pictures tell a tale.
One picture from the first week in May 2017, (Three weeks from now) The other picture is from an hour ago. Now you can understand the sour faces from up north.

LOL. Here in Central GA we almost set a record low this morning at 37*. Supposed to be 75* this afternoon and 85* tomorrow.

We're actually enjoying having a long spring this year. Normally we're the opposite of Wisconsin - our 2 seasons are Summer and January.

This was freaky. Thursday's forecast begins the warming trend. Temps in the mid 40's to 60's for next weekend. Now street flooding is the only concern.

Geeeesh Greg. Forgot about that string. If it's still cut up like that no wonder you're giving it away. If it had a windshield I would be willing to come and get it and haul it back to green bay on my utility trailer.

Sorry it's laid up like that. :(
The rocketman and I have been mailing back and forth. I sent him a link to a site that shows how to install a new transom from the outside which IMHO would be a lot easier and just as strong.

I believe the MFG group had a thread explaining the poured transom stuff with pictures. I never tried it, but I keep reading their successes. Digging out the wood seems to be one of the tedious parts.

Mark, "tedious" is putting it mildly. I did that on the Tomahawk and swore I'd never do it again. The really rotten stuff comes out easy but it there are any solid parts sticking to the glass....good luck. I had to make special tools , 3' piece of rebar ground down to a chisel edge to do the scraping, holding a flashlight in the mouth while working.
Who's that handsom couple in the background??

That is you on the dock trying to trick me into a race against your sleeper Tomahawk. You have at least 15 mph over me. I never thought about how any remaining good wood would still have adhesion. I guess that is when you are lucky if it is all rotten and crumbles out. Has anyone tried to remove the inside glass near the bottom and only remove a half panel like 5 to 7 or so inches while leaving about an inch at the bottom. Maybe that could help access getting the bottom wood out and then maybe a temporary piece of HDPE could be used with some caulk sealant to dam it back up so that liquid stuff could be poured in and cure. Then maybe remove that HDPE panel and re-glass the 5 to 7 inch pane back in??? Just some thinking out loud thoughts to make that tedious bottom wood chiseling have better access. I used the word tedious in place of cursing words lol. Good luck whatever way you choose. Posting pictures and explanations would be great in case I have to do one like that. I haven’t tested for rot yet, but you know the odds of a 1967 boat that day outside a few years.

Hey Frog, Thanks for the history lesson. Really informative pics! So, if you recall, the original transom was plywood all plywood, no particular solid wood edges glassed into the corners? And the wood in the keel, probably nonexistent at the very stern, not meeting up with the transom, they would be in separate compartments?

Hey Doc, a close look at the transom I see only a very thin layer of fiberglass, nothing that would provide any strength, I mean maybe 1/32 in is that what yours was like? if so maybe I should open the whole outside up remove the old and put a form on there then pour the transom. Or just replace the old with plywood and glass over it...

Go with the latter. The thing lasted 50 years. Putting a form? How would you anchor it and then keep it from leaking or bulging out.
Time to get the garbage can out. Next week Monday is forecast to be 73deg. Landings aren't set up yet but I can at least get the motor tuned up.

I would think that whatever transom rebuilding materials that would be used would become an integral adheared part of that outer skin. Mine was thin and only rated for 40hp with only 1 and a quarter inch thick at the top and bottom only an inch. It lasted over 50 years the first go around with cheap plywood. I would think anything you do today with new material and done carefully would really perform well. Mine is easy to access from the inside, so I want to keep my thin back outer shell in tact. My sides and both are way thicker. Just my circumstances. Yours may be way different and you will do what is your best interest. Regarding weather and boating season-2’ of snow last week and summer this week... welcome to Wisconsin. Rivers open and 30” of ice up north. I better put the Chopper Prop on the big rig lol.
