question about using 1708 type fiberglass 7 years 4 days ago #131414

New to all this so I need to ask. I want to put some 1708 fiberglass on the bottom outside hull of my boat project. what side should I use to face the hull wall, the woven side or the chop strand side????

just trying to add strength to it. my member project is a lake n sea 1959 boat, you can see the pictures I just posted

I'm not an expert, so maybe someone else will chime in here, but every boat I've ever worked on had the chop to the inside and weave (IF there was any) on the outside. I'd assume you'd want to go the same way with the reinforcement.

Why the outside bottom? You dont have access to the i side of the hull?

You'd need to remove the gelcoat wherever you want to apply the 1708, and apply it CSM side to the existing fiberglass. That leaves the weave side exposed. Which would then have to be filled and faired to cover/hide the weave, before applying gelcoat...

Why not add glass on the interior side of the hull where you wouldnt have to remove gelcoat or fill in the weave?

I totally agree with the above. NO WAY should/can you apply 1708 over the existing gelcoat. If you want to stiffen the hull...do it on the inside NOT the outside.
